yesterday, it hit the 40+ degree zone. it was the first time in 5 weeks, this has happened. however, we are told not to get too comfortable, for today, and the next 24 hours, we are expected to be hit with a variety of ‘liquid’ weather events.
“We’ll be exchanging one weather headache for another over the next 36 hours,” National Weather Service meteorologist Brian Tilley said. “It’s going to be a very active period.” Most of the Lower Peninsula should get at least one-half inch of liquid. The western Upper Peninsula will have most of the precipitation fall in the form of snow.
The weather service is predicting:
a drop in temperatures to the low 20s overnight
followed by:
an early morning wintery mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain.
the majority of the mix will be freezing rain
road surfaces should be pretty manageable, just be a matter of how much snow we get
expecting rain throughout the day and maybe even a rumble of thunder or two
with the storm drains clogged with snow we’re going to get some ponding on the roadways that could be difficult
rain is expected to fall on the region between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. as temperatures reach the mid 40s. milder air coming up from the south is bringing the warmer temperatures but will also lead to fog in the afternoon and evening as it sweeps over the snow on ground
we could be looking at some very impacted visibility between the snowfall and the fog. and we haven’t even gotten to the wind yet
the wind is expected to move in along with a cold front Thursday night between 8 p.m. and midnight
gusts up to 50 miles per hour, it’s going to be very substantial
the front will be bringing temperatures back down to where they had been. not quite as bad as when we were getting the polar vortexes, but certainly bringing the highs back below freezing for the weekend
with the drains clogged there could certainly be some risk for ponding on roads and some other flooding problems
not exactly sure how to dress for this series of ‘liquid events’ but it is sure to be one wild ride.

Oh, Jon Jefferson, that’s awful, but I can totally see that happening.
This morning I was sliding in my boots on ice and by this afternoon there wasn’t any ice, but there was lots and lots of rain. Then the fog came in. I’m waiting for rainbows, unicorns, and glitter to fall from the sky tomorrow.

I have this really bad habit of reading and commenting in bed which is the cause of many typos and incoherent sentences. That’s why my comment above says 11kindred spirits, in case you thought I was speaking in code.
In January my weather app sent an alert to my phone that read, “Freezing fog advisory”.” I reposted it on Facebook with the following headline, “This just in from Chicken Little:…

I just love how most of the world thinks of temps in the 40’s as “warm” while where we live temps in the 40’s may as well be freezing as we’re breaking out the cold weather gear! Stay safe :)

aloha KSBeth. i remember days like this. well. not exactly like this. just. . . . weather. all day and all night long. yeah, there is going to be weather.
of course i remember too that some people who live in the long winters around one of the poles have something like 36 different words for snow. the kind of snow it is. maybe we are just catching on to this kind of distinction.
yeah. it’s supposed to be weather here too. bundle in layers. that’s how i’d dress for your weather. for mine. . . . okay i’ll dress in layers too. just a little thinner layers probably.
as long as it’s going to be weathering outside, have fun. and if you dont have fun, make some. (okay, that’s just my philosophy) aloha.

From now on, I think we should just dome the Chicago area throughout the winter. It’s so dark outside i think we might just skip daytime entirely. Enough is enough already.

Reminds me of the January day way back when when I walked to school on a balmy 60 degree morning, got caught in a thunderstorm trying to get from the Metro station to school, Walked back to the train in pounding sleet, and then finished the walk back home in the snow. This all transpired over the course of about 4 hours…

I hear you. I just finished digging out my street side mail box from the piles that the plow stacked from the last snow storm almost a week ago. I’d set up a plastic shoe box as a temporarily catch. It was so warm yesterday I actually only wore a quilted jacket instead of a heavy coat on my errands.
We also make sure our street drains (as well as fire hydrants) are clear.
About four weeks (here anyway…on the calendar) until spring…
