not me or my mom or my hair but similar situation
except for the smile
—
’tis the season
kids return to classrooms
it’s school picture day
mom looks at your hair
finds the sewing scissors
‘let me just trim it up a bit’
or
‘i’ll just snip the uneven part off a little’
or
‘let’s just clean it up a touch’
your bangs
have finally grown
to be the perfect length
a little long
a little shaggy
just
below your eyebrows
hint of a shadow
brushing
just above the top
of your eyelashes
clean-up/trim begins
when it’s ‘done’
your mom
smiles
looks at your hair
you
look so cute
beautiful
you take
a peek in the mirror
long and fancy bangs
have disappeared
‘just a trim’
has returned
your bangs
close to the top
of your forehead
very near
their place of origin
they are
a straight line
that’s for sure
cleaned up
no doubt about that
there is always
next year
when you
will have grown
your bangs out
perfectly.
you hide the scissors…

*when he was asked if there was a name for his haircut, he replied ‘arthur.’
-george harrison, the beatles
* The name is said to have honored his school friend from Liverpool, Arthur Kelly,
who used to tease a young George about his thick, unruly hair by calling it a “turban.”

OMG! I cut my own hair one morning on picture day. It was awful. I refused to go to school. My dad stopped what he was doing on the farm and took me into the city to get a proper cut. I returned after lunch and still got my picture taken!

I like going to men’s barbershop near home to get my own haircut. I shorten my hair when they reach just below my eyes. While I was at school, every time the school was about to start, I would go for a haircut.

Love that quote! My hubby had lots of hair back then, and also from Liverpool. He looked a lot like GH back then (like 40 years ago).

I don’t think you have a real childhood if your mother never cut your hair…

Absolutely! And let’s face it, not many of our mothers were hairdressers… so, bowl cuts and short/crooked bangs were de rigueur…

Probably why so many of us had the same hairstyle

My mom would give me a quarter for a haircut. I’d go to the barber and pull one hair from my head and ask him to snip it. He would. Then, I’d take the quarter and go to the deli for a candy bar. It worked for a while. My mom was smart enough to tell me to get “all” my hairs cut. I obeyed.

My brother and I once cut each other’s hair when we were little. That tragedy lives on forever in one of my mom’s photo albums.

So funny! Classic. when I was a teacher the three, four and five-year-olds were strengthening their fine motor skills and practicing using scissors. Every so often once they got the hang of using them one would cut someone else’s hair sitting next to them, just to try it out. It never went well with the kids or the parents.

I did that to myself.
No tape, just a pair of scissors cutting. Cutting crooked. Cutting more. Still crooked. Cutting, cutting til just a 1/4 inch from the roots and there I couldn’t tell if they were crooked.
Think I wore a bandana for awhile.

😂 sorry, I know your pain. I also have a couple more stories, one where I tried to cut my own hair later in life and the other when I tried to cut my daughter’s hair when she was late elementary early middle school. Both disasters.

The MAIN Reason why we aren’t hairdressers eh? 🤗

When I was a pre-teen, I bought a comb that also cuts hair! It was literally a black plastic comb with a razor blade embedded in it – tore out a massive chuck of hair on the first comb and I wore a baseball cap for two weeks.
