89th annual Mud Bowl
It’s another home game in the Big House today for the Michigan Wolverines, but meanwhile on campus, this happens first:
Started in 1932, the annual Mud Football Bowl takes place during Fall Rush homecoming in the natural kettle hole on the side of the old SAE frathouse, which the Ann Arbor fire department fills with 10,000 gallons of water. The party is now thrown by the Michigan Mudbowl Club and all proceeds benefit the UM Mott Children’s Hospital and many, many turn out to cheer them on and celebrate.

Glad to hear they raise money for charity, but it wouldn’t be something I would enjoy being part of. :)
Best wishes, Pete.

I like to wallow, warm mud and a hot spring would be my choice but thoughts and deeds are often enhanced by some mental wallowing.

It’s an odd tradition, for sure, but with the purpose of raising money for charity, it looks like fun-as long as I don’t have to be a part of it. Although, there are many days I feel like hippopotamus.

Have you ever been tempted to plunge in yourself? If so, did you ever give in to the temptation?
As for the quotation, it seems not to be by Sandburg. You can find more details in the discussion at
In particular, the comment there by Vindwyn links to a poem by Sandburg that says “There is an eagle in me and a mockingbird . . . and the eagle flies among the Rocky Mountains of my dreams and fights among the Sierra crags of what I want….” The poem mentions other animals, too, but not a hippopotamus.

What an interesting tradition, Beth! Thanks to all who raise needed money for the charity. It prodded my wayback mind to my Morrisville college days when two fraternities annually staged a rope pull over a stream next to the campus it was a muddy and wild site to this GDI talked into attending. (Gosh Darn Independent then and still.)

My buddies and I used to take part in an annual Mud Bowl game around Thanksgiving each year. To say that we played it way past our primes is an understatement. If we got through a game without a severe injury, that was a win.

Apropos of nothing, when I was a TA at the University of Denver I became an honorary SAE. Somehow I was the shit as far as that frat house was concerned. They all took my writing classes. Life is so so very strange. I love the idea of mud football.
