not mine, but a step up
from the ashtrays we used to make in art class at school
as a christmas gift for our parents.

I made my mum a copper fruit bowl in metalwork class, and she kept it until she died. I also made my dad a tie-rack in woodwork class, but he never fixed it into his wardrobe because the wood was a different colour.
Best wishes, Pete.

amazing projects, both

No! … both my parents had just given up ‘smoking’ back then.

I know, it was a weird choice, looking back, but very common in school at that time.

I used to write mum and dad poems; I was hopeless with my hands :)

Yes, Beth, my creations in art AND shop classes were of no use at all around our house.

Luckily the ashtrays were mostly just a lump of clay with a hollowed out center)

Oh my gosh…yes! I remember! They became excellent doorstops…heavy clodhoppers intended to be ashtrays but never used (which was a good thing, I think) for their intended purposes. 😜

Makes me think of Bill Cosby, who said that everything he made in shop class turned out to be an ashtray…

I crafted a tiny bowl for, what? Junk, me thinks. Certainly not ashes.

Yep, and we were a household of non-smokers. Strangely, nobody even challenged this nonsense.

What parent doesn’t still have some sort of school art project stored somewhere – a gift from a proud child who loved to play with clay!

My mom smoked and probably used the ashtray I made. But they’re long gone. Mom went through the sky-door in 2012.

awww, and now I feel bad giving my parents ashtrays, but they did use them

My parents still have a collection of wonky ashtrays molded by little fingers and painted in bright, ridiculous colors. No one in my house ever smoked, but they were great for collecting change.

My mother kept a glass jar I glued macaroni to, and then spray-painted gold, from my elementary school days. Made me smile every time I visited her as the years went on. It became the “keeper of all writing implements.”

We keep our kids projects. When they grow up and see them, they want to know why we don’t throw them away.

I remember making one of those even though no one smoked in the family. Must have been an ornamental piece. 🤣

Even in a non smoking household, we kept ash trays around for smokers. I guess we didn’t want them flicking ashes on the carpet or the good dishes.
