buttered noodles
are the most frequently mentioned favorite food
through all of my years
living with, knowing, and teaching children
and universally
what many, many, many adults still choose
in fact
the exact food i was craving last night after all the holiday food.
—
recipe:
boil noodles until tender.
drain.
put noodles in a bowl and toss with butter until melted.
add salt and pepper if you’d like.
put in a bowl or on a plate.
add even more butter on top.
—
what is it about them the makes them a favorite?
For some, it’s the gobs of butter intertwined between each strand of pasta that brings joy. For others, it’s the comforting nostalgia that takes them back to the good old days. The thing about buttered noodles is that you really can’t botch the meal.
what is their origin story?
The origin of buttered noodles is disputed. Everywhere from China to Rome to Germany claims to have invented the simple dish. What we do know for certain is that buttered noodles embody the simple everyday comforts so many seem to enjoy—no matter their cuisine or culture.

We eat noodles and pasta as an accompaniment to other things, rarely on their own. I have never thought to toss them in butter though. (Sounds tasty)
Best wishes, Pete.

Good all on their own. Add parmesan and you have the simplest Alfredo sauce.

That sounds delicious. Though last night after BBQ ribs with salads for dinner, I craved ice cream. Enjoyed it with chocolate sauce, too.

I love buttered noodles! And that picture takes me back. When my mother was making a casserole, she always had extra noodles which she gave to us…with butter, of course!

Oh, Beth, yes, indeed!
For a side note, my mother would change things up by replacing the butter with cream cheese for a different edge. If you haven’t tried it, take it for a spin!

The simplicity of this is what makes it so delicious. I’d add a little dill and plenty black pepper at one meal and parsley or cilantro in another because I’d make plenty to have leftovers. 😋

I can’t say as I’ve ever had “just buttered noodles.” But I can see where this would be the named comfort food. For me it’s mac and cheese or grilled cheese and tomato soup.

Big favorites in my family like mac ‘n cheese. I can eat neither because it is all about red sauce for me!

An absolute favorite of my grandkids. My own kids, adults now, doctor them up a bit more… red pepper flakes and/or sprinkled cheese. Simple and inexpensive!

I subbed at summer camp this week, and at lunch we talked about noodles. The favorite topping by far was butter. Thank goodness buttered noodles are still loved today
