i’ve recently seen not one, but two, outstanding cobbler shops
one in portugal
a combo cobbler shop and bar
and this one in my town
bursting with creativity
a good cobbler is a treasure
both an artist and a craftsman.

“i think most of us are raised with preconceived notions of the choices we’re supposed to make. we waste so much time making decisions based on someone else’s idea of our happiness – what will make you a good citizen or a good wife or daughter or actress. nobody says, ‘just be happy – go be a cobbler or go live with goats.’”

We have a shoe repair man in our local town who also makes replacement/spare keys. His shop is busy 6 days a week, and there is always a queue. I mostly use him for watch batteries.
Best wishes, Pete.

I love these kind of businesses, they seem rare these days, but so important in a community

Yes, in an age where everything seems to be a corporate chain, it’s good to know that a one-man repair shop is getting a lot of customers.

Agree with everyone else – great quote. Wish I’d realised that so so many years ago and wish I’d taught it to my children X

Although at first reading Sandra Bullock’s quote seems like a good idea, on second thought, one must be responsible, creative and be able to be of service to his fellow man… One should not be so selfish as to seek the company of goats… Cheers and all the best!

I’d have to go to another town to find a shoe repair! Ours closed shop a few years ago. Did darn good work. Not sure if I am prepared to travel to Portugal, though it might be fun.

I remember that my grandfather used to get his shoes re-soled, Beth. He scoffed at our “uncomfortable” shoes.

yes, it was more popular then. I had the cobbler here, redo my Birkenstock soles and did an excellent job.

What a wonderful-looking shop and excellent quotes (I recently read the one by Michel de Montaigne). I am lucky, we have two in my home town :)

Oh, I do love the wisdom of Sandra Bullock (she says so many down-to-earth things), and I especially love cobbler’s windows. They are always dusty with stuff the cobbler has collected over the years. Much better, they seem to be saying, than putting the clients’ used shoes in the window!

It must mean something when you found two of them within a short time. Sandra Bullock’s quote is awesome!

A cobbler/bar combo is brilliant. Take off your shoes and have a drink!

What a brilliant quote by Sandra Bullock. We lost our cobbler a few years ago, he retired and was there when I was a child.

Faribault has a shoe repair shop, too, along with a third-generation family shoe store. Love, love, love Burkhartzmeyer Shoes. Thanks for sharing your cobblers.

When I was young before casual dress at work, I got my good shoes re-heeled and re-soled all the time at the little shoemaker shops. Now I only wear running shoes, even with a suit. Times change!
