going over the frozen lake to mackinac island, michigan, 1950s
once the only way to get there in the winter months
—
while inside:
The Mackinac Island library’s fireplace, which roars with warmth when the temps don’t soar. the fireplace is adorned with tiles that are works of art, and above the fireplace is a Shakespeare quote from “The Tempest,” which is set on a fairy isle, not unlike Mackinac. It reads,
“The isle is full of noises, sounds and sweet airs that give delight and hurt not.”

This reminds me of the movie Shipping News with Kevin Spacey. Thanks for sharing!

Wow … frozen lakes, no such thing over here, Beth … and I’m sleeping with the door open, trying to cool the place down …

isn’t it so interesting, all of the contrasts in the world?

This reminds me of that show “Ice Road truckers” – where the only way to their destinations sometimes – are over the frozen lakes and rivers.
This was a fun post to see. :)
That fireplace looks lovely.

The idea of an island cut off by ice in the winter is very romantic, and the photo is an excellent choice.
Best wishes, Pete.

What a great pic Beth. I’ve been wanting to visit Mackinac ever since I read about it in a book a couple of decades ago. Can imagine the coziness at this time of year. Lovely!

a small population stay year round, but it would be really special to be there then

I’ve been to Mackinac Island! How interesting that the ferry didn’t run in the winter. Love the library picture – so cozy!

Libraries with a big fireplace are such havens! We have such a big snowstorm today that all our public libraries closed for the day. I bet the lake is also completely frozen over now too!

yes, the winter life is so very different for all of us who experience it

I almost made it to the island one year, although if we had gone, it would have been over the bridge. I would love to see this picturesque library in person someday with the art tiles and beautiful quote above the fireplace. It feels magical to me, Beth. Thank you.

Reminds me of a few islands in northern Sweden. How do you get there in summer. Is there a ferry?

yes, exactly. or you can sail there or fly a small plane

I’ve never been to the island in the winter. I should try it sometime. We went a couple of years ago during the summer and it was packed. It was hard to step into shops and browse. I’ve never seen it so busy.

Yes it can get so busy in the summer – spring and fall seem best

I’d have to stay home. I’m too chicken to cross frozen (supposedly) bodies of water.
