what about bob?

Standard

how my desktop computer setup appeared to me back in the day

years ago, in another universe

when i worked in the world of advertising

I was in an office setting and used a desktop computer

of course it was often the bane of my existence

but somehow I worked with/around it

getting most of the things I needed to do on my computer done

after a lot of trial and error and who knows what

one day, our long suffering multi-tasking creative/i.t. guy

came into my office after returning from a conference

he sat down in front of my desk and shared something he’d learned there

they had talked about how every office has a ‘bob’

a person who could do things to their computer

that they could not explain or get out of

or their computer got so messed up

that the i.t. person had to fix it

but had never seen anything like it before

they had to try to undo what had been done

 the bob could not explain

how it happened

how they got there

what they were trying to do

he said, ‘beth, you are our ‘bob’

he got up out of the chair and returned to his office.

‘in my case, there are only two kinds of hope – bob hope and no hope.’

  1. Sorry to hear you were ‘The Bob’. I know the feeling, as when I worked for the Police in Special Operations, I sat at a setup very similar to the one in the photo. Four screens, a CCTV monitor, and a radio and telephone system too. It was like tring to keep six plates spinning on sticks at the same time, for twelve hours. And I often failed to do that.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. I feel like you took being the “Bob” of the office and made it a humor situation. :)
I worked in auto glass / insurance many years back and we had to work off two side – by – side desktops and I knew how, but I hated it because it was a back-and-forth thing.
Glad you’re able to laugh about it. <3

  3. As a retiree, I’m a Better Bob now than I ever was at work. Luckily my son, who is actually in IT, lives just a mile away. “Okay, Mom, what did you do this time?” “I dunno. I might have … I was just trying to …” (I have a laptop, smartphone, smartwatch, and Google wifi, so I’m a very Busy Bob.)
