What did Erma Bombeck write about her father?
My dad left the house every morning and always seemed glad to see everyone at night.
He opened the jar of pickles when nobody else could.
He was the only one in the house who wasn’t afraid to go to the basement by himself.
He cut himself shaving, but no one kissed it or got excited about it.
for all fathers and father figures here and gone

  1. My dad seemed to stop liking me when I hit my teenage years. Then he left my mum for another woman when I was 24 and I never saw him again. I had good childhood memories of him, but they were all soured by his actions and behaviour in later life. For 25 years I have tried my best to be a good step-father to four children who are now adults, but their own dad is very much around, so he (rightly) gets to celebrate Father’s Day with them.
    Best wishes, Pete.

  2. I love the small, deeply personal and seemingly mundane observations in this tribute, Beth. Those things that are so unique to someone and their relationship.

Wishing a Happy Fathers Day to all who are celebrating and/or remembering today!
