*In New Mexico, you’ll find charming fences made of small branches called ‘latillas’ made primarily from native cedar or juniper poles. These rustic fences have a rich history, passed down through generations of indigenous and Hispanic communities.Originally built to keep out wildlife like coyotes, they’ve become a beloved part of the Southwestern landscape, especially in Santa Fe-style architecture.

  1. interesting and fascinating, and ‘plus ça change’ (the more it changes, the more it stays the same) as the described was already fashionable and used those 50 yrs ago. We also have lattice fences, they are not regional but made out of necessity. In many poorer regions or where they had woods, fences were and are made (in much handywork! – very costly when not DIY) and still in use in Switzerland, England, France. It’s such a truly ‘original’ way of using what’s available, looks terrific and does the job. Thanks for taking us with you on your trip. I particularly love the stone river – so rivetting! 💕
