candle hack of the day:
light candles with uncooked spaghetti
new to me: if you don’t have a match or a lighter, and you want to light a candle, or you’ve got a candle sitting at the bottom of a tall, thin jar, you may be wondering how to reach the wick to light it. grab some dry spaghetti from the pantry instead, which works beautifully as an extra-long matchstick. with caution, light the piece of spaghetti on the stove, then take the flaming piece of pasta and carefully use it to light whatever candles you so choose. voila!
note: when i first learned about this hack, i started looking for examples, and it led to me down a rabbit hole, to a whole candle/pasta industry…
candles that look like pasta, pasta candleholders, candles in your pasta, party candles shaped like pasta….hoo boy, it’s endless..
quotes from Reddit users:
“Either light some spaghetti. Or, get your shoes on, get in the car, go to the store, spend money on a thing, then come back and then light the candle. Brother that ain’t easier.”
“Tiny matches and flames scare me, so this keeps my fingers back and is so easy.”
“Once I didn’t have any matches to light my menorah, so I lit a slice of spaghetti on fire with my stove and it worked beautifully.”
‘Safety Skeptics’ responses/quotes:
“Lighting a candle with a spaghetti noodle is not recommended because spaghetti takes a significant amount of time to ignite.
“When the spaghetti finally lights, it can curl over, posing a fire hazard as it may drop on toes, pets, the floor, or into the candle itself.”
wear shoes, tell you pets to beware and choose your own adventure.

That’s a really useful tip for anyone with spaghetti in the house. But I never use dry spaghetti only fresh, so while I am driving to the shop to get some, I might as well buy some extra-long matches. ☺️(I actually light those kind of candles using one of these. https://www.diy.com/departments/diall-long-flame-gas-lighter/1274234_BQ.prd?storeId=1327) Best wishes, and happy weekend! Pete.

I use dry pasta sheets for lasagna, but I buy fresh (pre-packed and sold in the supermarket) for all other types.
Best wishes, Pete.

what an extraordinary discovery, beth! I bought those extra long matches, but also have several ‘long armed’ electronic lighters with usb charges, very cheap to use and far more reliable than matches (often breaking, both matches and boxes having too little ignition on the sticks). I stick with my ‘newish’ equipment. But I always have linguine (in lieu of spaghetti) in stock, so….. but no gas cooker, hence i’d need (several) matches to light the pasta ;) oh heck!

You can light it with your lighter 🔥

Spaghetti is a great idea for lighting candles. Unfortunately, I stopped buying and lighting them due to the cats and my sensitivity toward some of the scents.

😮 A Mac & Cheese candle!!! And what a good idea for those tall jars. I use fireplace matches for those but the pasta is probably a better idea, since I never run out of pasta. This was so much fun and again…a Mac & Cheese candle. So cute.

I have used this hack a number of times for candles melted down so low in a holder that only something long will do. It’s great when one doesn’t have long matches or long lighters!

I have heard this but don’t remember ever trying it. We keep the big long matches on hand.

I did not know about this trick. However, we have a few of those long lighters so we don’t need to use spaghetti. Like that skeptic said, it might be a fire hazard.

Yep, I’ve been using long thin spaghetti to light candles deep in the bottom of glass lamps for years. Nifty.

I guess I’m screwed, because I usually make spaghetti with medium shell pasta (a great vehicle for scooping up the sauce, if you’re in the mood for another pasta-related hack). Not that it matters anyway; my glass top stove wouldn’t work.
You know, I’m just going to keep a flashlight on hand.
