let him make toast!

Standard

(not the guy who passed me, but it might as well have been, if you can imagine him going uphill)

riding my bike

downhill

using my brakes

to slow down a bit

when

a unicyclist passed me going

uphill

a smile and a nod

no struggle

how is this even a thing?

i’m just trying not to crash

 make it back from town

with

a loaf of bread

no scrapes

no scratches

no blood

no band-aids needed

dignity mostly intact

on my two-wheel bicycle.

here’s what ai had to say about it:

Riding a unicycle uphill requires intense, continuous leg power to fight gravity at the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock pedal positions. Meanwhile, riding a bicycle downhill relies on momentum, gravity, and brake control to safely manage speed.

no big difference really

we each have our skills

i’m on team gravity

for the win

and

 i now can make toast.

“a bike is just a unicycle with training wheels.”

-common unicyclist joke

  1. I can’t even imagine trying to do it. But good for you riding a bike, Beth. And of course, the most important thing is being able to make toast.
    (Did you ever read the Eyre Affair? There’s a running joke/motif about toast.)

  2. Isn’t this amazing? My son, now in his early 30s, has been unicycling since grade school. He started a unicycle club in Boston, where he lives. They play basketball while riding unicycles. Several years ago we attended the international unicycling convention in northern Minnesota. My favorite part was the choreographed “dancing” on unicycles.

  3. A fun image just flashed in my head from Go Dog Go, where dogs are riding regular bikes and scooters and unicycles too, haha, all going in different directions. I love to ride my bike, so I’m all in getting some bread! Thanks, Beth.

  4. goodness me… my husband, as he then was, and I were riding up Brockway Mountain in the U.P. on our ten speeds… the trek up was exhausting, and I walked my bike up the last part. He was waiting patiently, and as soon as he saw me, he hopped back on his bike and went screaming down the other side with legs kicked out to each side, laughing! Me? uh, NO! I walked the bike d-o-w-n that steep hill so as not to be thrown from the bike after attaining a speed unknown to my tires. Needless to say, I never did that again.

  5. I always wonder how much training these guys have to learn this. I know skiers who do all those aerial jumps practice ahead of time by landing in those pits full of foam, but how do you practice this activity without hurting yourself?

  6. thank you beth, for this post. made me chuckle and the ai explanation made me realise that I’d be happy to be able to ‘just’ bike again. I can’t do that anymore because with my bad eyesight I wouldn’t be able to avoid anything lying on the road and probably would crash and hurt somebody else or myself…. that made a truly great story!
