Michigan is known for having one of the densest networks of traditional, family-owned sweet cider mills (over 125 licensed mills) alongside a massive hard cider industry, producing roughly one billion pounds of apples annually. Established in 1886, Dexter Cider Mill is Michigan’s oldest continuously operating cider mill. It sits right on the banks of the Huron River and uses an original oak rack press.
Selling wood-pressed fresh unpasteurized cider, warm cinnamon doughnuts, caramel apples, apple nut bread, and small-batch hard ciders. Cash or check only.

There’s a farm stand here that sells their own cider–and slushies–but no cider mills that I know of. How delightful! I’m imagining the entire place smelling like apples.

Wow, 140 years and still churning? That’s impressive longevity. It’s nice when an industry like that can hold out for so long.

i agree, and still doing the same thing it always has – people have come to rely on it being there. p.s. you were right about the tree with the red berries, it’s a crabapple tree –

Lovely. I’ve heard that they’re very tart, so I should not be too eager to eat one.

we used to eat them as kids of course, we ate everything we found outside and amazingly are all still standing

yes – and this mill is the real deal, old school, telling that they only take cash and checks –

I used to work for a cider company as a sales representative. Bulmer’s Cider, one of the biggest in Britain. After touring the factory to see the production process, we saw so many wasps disappearing into the mixture, that we used to call cider ‘Wasp-Juice’. 😊

yikes, and i get that, as soon as you sit down to drink a cup and have a donut, they appear -)

There were so many wasps in the factory, I was amazed by how inured the staff were to their presence.

I really miss my bottle of scrumpy. Hard to get here in Peru. Only one shop I know sells it, and it is Spanish cider. So, the first thing I do when arriving in England is……………. ahhhhhhhnhn!.
