on the long weekend
some of everything
sharing a spaghetti dinner with family
relaxing with friends at the lake
by the fire
waking up to a morning moon
a visit to the renaissance festival
cavorting with royalty, vikings, faerie folk, gnomes, jesters, magicians, musicians, artisans, knights, peasants, horses, dogs, dancers, warriors, barbarians, huns, lords and ladies…
and on the third day, she rested.
“on a long weekend, the possibilities are endless,
and we have the freedom to do as much or as little as we please.”

yes, i know it’s not cheese, but something about this sauce is like liquid gold to me
—
A Florida woman filed a class action lawsuit against Kraft Heinz … claiming its Velveeta Shells & Cheese prep time is not actually “ready in 3 1/2” minutes, as advertised.
She states that the 3.5 minutes is only the amount of time the food has to go in the microwave and claims it takes more time to actually prepare the meal — don’t forget you’ve got to pour water into the cup and stir in the cheese sauce.
She doesn’t say how long it takes her, but claims the 4 steps listed in the directions — remove the lid and cheese sauce pouch, add water to the fill line and stir, microwave for 3 1/2 minutes, and then stir in the cheese sauce — don’t equate to the mac actually being READY to eat in that time frame.
She’s also looking to put together a class of customers who might also be upset about the prep time and says the damages will exceed $5 million.
“We are aware of this frivolous lawsuit and will strongly defend against the allegations in the complaint,” the company reportedly told USA Today.
*editorial opinion: what if she was to devote all of the time and energy and money it is taking her to create, publicize, rally people, and carryout this lawsuit, and instead, use it as the ‘extra unplanned prep time’ she feels she is wasting and it requires, when making her shells and cheese? or, make it from scratch and compare the prep time needed. just a thought… (beth)

as i watched team u.s.a. hold their ground tonight against portugal
it reminded me of where i was 20 years ago.
it was 1994
and somehow
i talked my boss where i was an advertising intern during the day,
and my boss at the hotel where i worked as a cocktail waitress at night,
and my professors where i was taking classes at all hours,
and my ex-husband who i shared my daughter-time with,
into agreeing to work around my special schedule for a few weeks.
——
i applied to work at the 1994 fifa world cup here in detroit.
4 matches would be played on my turf.
i told fifa i would love to do it
before i had negotiated any time off
but
i knew it would be a once in a lifetime extraordinary experience
that i would find a way to do it
and then it became a reality.
—-
my job was to work in press operations in the media center.
helping the press with credentials, schedules, seats. access and information.
we were taught about the nuances of soccer
the role of the press
how to deal with the passionate fans
and the customs and languages of the countries participating
learning helpful things like:
‘if a russian offers you a shot of vodka, it’s an insult to say no, so you’ll have to find a diplomatic way to do so.’
i met so many enthusiastic fans along the way
and also
interesting press from all around the world.
—-
on my first day,
a photojournalist
based in hong kong
working for the french press
of dutch and italian descent
walked in.
he was smiling
as i gave him his credentials,
answered his questions
and told him to enjoy the games.
later that night
i left the media center
and turned back into
a cocktail waitress.
as i approached a table
a man turned around
i saw it was the journalist i had met earlier in the day.
we were surprised to see each other again
he told me some of the press corps were staying at my hotel.
i told him i worked there on some nights.
very, very small world.
we parted ways when his group left for the night.
—
each day at the world cup was a new adventure
i was able to see the matches
and enjoy the frenzied air of competition and excitement.
and many times
out of 78,000 people
the journo and i kept crossing paths
in unlikely places.
—
between his schedule and mine
and ever changing locations
and job commitments
and no cell phones
and no computer
we kept trying to set up a time and place
to meet away from the stadium
when neither of us was working
to have a real conversation.
—
finally
it was his last night here
and the final match in detroit was being played.
i was finished in the media tent for the day
we planned to meet at a local bar
after he filed his report.
i went to the bar
and found the brazilian fans there celebrating
it was total madness and fun and frolic
and then
the police came
and shut down the bar
for the first time
in history.
the brazilians’ exuberant and intense enthusiasm
had somehow overflowed
to the outside
they were dancing
a samba line
down woodward avenue
a major thoroughfare in the detroit area.
the bar was done for the night
and the crowd dispersed.
—
we were never able to find each other that night
we had no backup plan
for a place to meet
we went our separate ways
armed with addresses
and the beginning of a friendship.
i went back to my jobs/school/life
he continued on with his assignments
and flew back to hong kong.
—
we began to write letters
and we have been pen pals for 20 years now (almost 30 now)
we send hand-written letters
and postcards
back and forth from all over the world
we’ve gone through life together on paper
relationships, family, jobs, moving, school, vacations
and stayed friends
who never dated each other
maybe one day
we’ll find ourselves in the same country once more
at the same time.
and we can continue our conversation.

did you ever own and proudly wear a charm bracelet?
mine is long gone, but i still remember it fondly
i would save up money for charms, or ask for them as gifts
deciding what part of me i most wanted to display.
i can only remember three charms that were on my bracelet:
a book – because i always loved books
a horse – because i went to horse camp one summer
a heart – because i was always a fan of love.
( two of the three i would still choose today, and i might swap a pencil for the horse)
i loved wearing it, sharing charm stories with friends, and listening to it jangle on my wrist.
if you had to pick just three charms that would describe you today, what might they be?
—
“good memories are like charms…each is special.
you collect them by one by one,
until one day you look back and discover they make a long, colorful bracelet.”
-james patterson, american author of 200+ books
—
*Throughout many different cultures across history, charms were often used as symbols of faith, allegiance, and amulets to ward off evil spirits. The more modern chain-link bracelet with charms is thought to have come onto the scene sometime in the Victorian era. A charm bracelet is a type of bracelet which carries personal jeweled ornaments or “charms”, such as decorative pendants or trinkets. The decorative charms usually carry personal or sentimental attachment by the owner.

digiorno is dropping a pizza topped with both pineapple and pickle in an effort to enrage the entire internet. which side are you on?
According to a statement provided to Food & Wine, the pizza is made with “a hand-tossed crust, with those all-important toppings. While we’d love to say we all get to try it, we can’t. Because DiGiorno knows this is just too explosive for a true mass-market release.
Instead, DiGiorno will give people the chance to snag one frozen pizza for free at shopdigiorno.goodnes.com via weekly drops. But please note that the website will not go live until September 5, so bookmark the URL for future use.
The pies will be limited to one per person, only available while supplies last, and shipping will only be available within the United States. We are very sure these pickle and pineapple frozen pizzas will go quickly.
