and what cat
could resist
the sharing
of
fingertips
full of
sweet and magical dots
called
astronaut ice cream?
he came in
carefully
hung up his cane
slowly
sat down
easing into
a booth
by himself
facing the door
welcomed
by the staff
who knew
his name
jim
ordered
his coffee
he sat
waited
greeted
the regulars
as they arrived
invited one
to share his booth
sit a bit
he smiled
said no
and still
he sat
welcoming them all
as they
paid homage to him
reaching out
connecting
with
a nod
a smile
a quick hello
as he held court
in the front booth
his morning spent
in the
local coney island
connecting
and
feeling
a part of the world.

once again
it seemed
like a good idea
at the time.
–
i was seven years old
when my
very cute
neighbor/paper boy
jd
told on me
for riding my bike
where i wasn’t
allowed to be riding
i got caught lying
by my mother
who asked me about it
i never was
a good actress
and there were
consequences
so together
with one of my sisters
and our good friend
we planned
our sweet revenge
in a style
only young children
could create.
–
we would collect
a huge pile of burrs
from the field
behind our houses
hide it in our summer tent
wait for the boys to show up
and
throw it at him
so he’d see who he messed with.
–
but
it took so long
it was such a hot summer day
it was so boring in there
and
i fell asleep in the tent
but somehow curled up
right on our
prickly pile of revenge
and
i woke up
with my hair
horribly embedded
with the all the burrs
so i
burst out crying
walked inside
asking nana
to help me
brush them out
i lost lots of hair
it hurt
it took
what seemed like hours
and
when it was over
my hair resembled
a giant ball of split end fuzz
so i
i went out on the front porch
to relax and eat a popsicle
and saw jd
delivering our paper
and
his hair looked darn good.

festifools brings students and community volunteers together to create
unique public art that is free and accessible to everyone by making
huge-mongous papier-mâché puppets and marching them down main
street in ann arbor in a experience that embraces and celebrates
the joy of community and uninhibited fun.
and everyone
is playing
and sharing
and in no time at all
the entire community
is in the street dancing
having become
a part of the parade
and the joy
is infectious
and
impossible to resist
—
if you wait for inspiration you’ll be standing on the corner after the parade is a mile down the street.

sirens blaring
phone blowing up
with alarms
take cover
take cover
tv buzzing
if you can
see this
or
hear this
take cover
take cover
so
i went to
my bathtub
safest spot in my cottage
and
rode out
the storm
relaxing
and
blogging
and
reading
and
listening
to music
and
my daughter
texted me
to say
‘that’s exactly how you’d like to go, isn’t it?’
and
i had to agree
and
i kept
my laptop
and
my head
above water
and
all the while
something like this
was going on outside
but inside
all was calm
—
if you want to see the sunshine,
you have to weather the storm.
