My name “Ivor” has Scandinavian origins… but there’s no “uff da” when I express that I’m baffled or bewildered….!!

As a Swede living among Norwegians, I often heard “Uff, da!” but it wasn’t part of our vocabulary. You’re right that it’s a marker, though — as much a part of the heritage as Lutefisk and Lefse.

Uff da has been part of my vocabulary for years, mostly as an exclamation point. A Finnish woman told me it probably originated in Norway.

I think I’ve heard it before. Living in Germany, mom was always saying “get your feet uff da sofa or get your sticky fingers uff da wall. I do love the way you have found to use it more. ;)
