Fat Tuesday is here and bakeries and grocery stores area ready!

Paczki Day, also known as Shrove Tuesday, Fat Tuesday and Mardi Gras, (leading into Lent, for those who celebrate), rolls around every year accompanied by its calorie-heavy treat. One Paczki is actually called a paczek, but you can never have just one. The fried doughnuts are known for their Polish roots. More traditional styles contain fruit fillings but jellies, custards, creams and glazes have made their way into the holiday.

    These Paczki look GREAT, yummy yummy.
    Our dear Master was born in Cologne where this day is called Veilchen Dienstag (Violet’s Tuesday). We had the tradition that you eat such pancakes in a group on pancake day as well, unfortunately one pancake was filled with hot mustard. Once when living in the Arctic we ate pacakes as well. In one of these pancakes was a hazelnut. Who had this pancake would becoming mother or father that year.

  8. Sadly, as with so many things, the holiday’s purpose has been watered down and many people will take the opportunity to munch on doughnuts as though that equaled eating faschnauts. Interestingly enough, chances are that they will eat doughnuts as soon as another opportunity presents itself (think morning meetings, walking by the bakery at your grocery store, seeing the display case at your coffee shot, etc.), which defeats the purpose for which it was intended.

  14. Of course I grew up eating the Polish doughnut we called, pronunciation wise, Punch-key, Beth. The kind we got in Brooklyn always had a prune-jelly filling and were covered with granular sugar. Happy Fat Tuesday indeed.

  19. Ha! We picked up a box of paczki yesterday, not knowing what they were and what the occasion was. The reason we picked them up was because they looked a bit like the Hanukkah donuts that are very hard to find. They were apple-filled and delicious! A cross between the Jewish donuts and new orleans beignets. Yum. The only disappointment is finding out that i will have to wait another year now.

  25. Oh man oh man do I miss living and working in Michigan. Your photo has my eyes watering and salivating from memories of those delicious treats. Massachusetts has a lot going for itself – like Pony Henge – but paczki? Not so much sadly. Great post.
