Cinzia Paolina De Lio was dismissed in 2017 after she reappeared for four months and triggered complaints.
Italy’s highest court confirmed the dismissal after a legal battle, saying her absences showed a “permanent and absolute ineptitude”. Ms De Lio has condemned the ruling and vowed to “reconstruct the truth”.
“I will reconstruct the truth of the facts of this absolutely unique and surreal story”, she said adding, “I don’t answer questions from journalists thrown around that wouldn’t do justice to the truth of my story.”
The ministry argued that the teacher had kept out of the classroom for 20 out of her 24 years of service. For the first 10 years she was completely absent, and her absences in the other 14 years were attributed to sickness, personal or family reasons.
The court heard that in a four-month period in 2015 when she did teach in Chioggia near Venice, students complained of her lack of preparedness, her failure to bring textbooks and her “random and improvised” way of marking. An inspection found she was “unprepared” and “inattentive”, and students refused to take part in her classes as she was distracted by her phone.
Her 2017 dismissal turned into a legal battle, going through an appeal and counter-appeal, before finally arriving at the top court. Her defence of “freedom of teaching” was rejected by the court which argued it was the teacher’s responsibility to guarantee students’ right to study.

She got away with that for so long, incredible! Let’s hope the never let her back in a classroom.
Best wishes, Pete.

We have ghost schools and ghost teachers here too. Everyone is getting paid but there’s nothing on the site.

Wow, what a story! Unbelievable and yet true – you couldn’t make it up! I feel so sorry for all the students she let down by her absence.

They probably had a better teacher in her absence

Bizzaro! Her colleagues obviously preferred her to be absent rather than present. The students, likely relieved at not having to put up with her. And the state continued to pay her salary. As she says … Such a surreal situation.

Oh man…or woman in this case. :) And I’m pretty sure she got paid all those years whether she was there or not. That’s crazy! I’m dying to hear what her reasons for the absences were..but how could she remember 20 years worth of them? Hah!

Paying her amounted to approval of what she was doing (or not doing). So figured why not keep doing what she was doing (or not doing). Bizarre story.

I can’t believe anyone put up with her that long. Italy must have one heck of a teachers’ union:)

These are rare situations as most teachers are incredibly dedicated. Unfortunately, it’s the last thing the profession needs as some anti-education/anti-teacher union will try to portray this as the norm. We need to weed out the bad ones like this that bring shame to the profession. I feel the same way about law enforcement. The majority are great and do a difficult job well, but some behaviors are indefensible and those are the ones we need to rid.

there are always the outliers in any group, and they find it easier to work the system rather than to put in the work

As incredible as all those years of absence is the bureaucracy that let her get away with it for so long.

exactly, this had to be somehow supported by the system

I simply fail to grasp how this could go unnoticed for SO many years. And the audacity of that woman to exclaim that the story wasn’t true! I also think that happenings like this is so NOT what our teachers need. They invest so much of themselves to give kids a happy childhood, a good education – and then comes along one of the ‘Cinzias’…
