“A little boy sent me a charming card with a little drawing on it. I loved it. I answer all my children’s letters – sometimes very hastily – but this one I lingered over. I sent him a card and I drew a picture of a Wild Thing on it. I wrote, ‘Dear Jim: I loved your card.’ Then I got a letter back from his mother and she said: ‘Jim loved your card so much he ate it.’ That to me was one of the highest compliments I’ve ever received. He didn’t care that it was an original Maurice Sendak drawing or anything. He saw it, he loved it, he ate it.”
Maurice Sendak, as noted by Luke Davies in an article in the Brisbane Times, December 3, 2011.

Today I attended my poetry group meeting and the theme was ‘Buffet’ and presented this piece for my fellow poets to chew on …
“Deep and Deeper?”
while afloat we keep seeking
and building boats that keep leaking
time sails by and we keep weeping
I often wonder how deep
humanity’s knowledge is
yet unseen …
how deep are our oceans
yet unseen …
how deep is the universe
yet unseen …
how deep is humanity’s love
for one another
yet unseen …

Thanks for sharing this great story, but can you imagine the child’s mother’s horror?

right, but not unlike a child to think of doing this

This story makes my heart happy. I suspect that very few of us, as children, did not eat paper of some kind and we all survived. And apparently yours was so delicious that it didn’t even need any condiments or a glass of milk to wash it down!

I’ve read this before. Maurice Sendak was a treasure. Did you ever hear–I think it was his last interview with Terry Gross on Fresh Air?

This is a first on hearing about someone loving a card so much, they ate it! What an amazing and unusual compliment to Maurice Sendak. I guess sometimes that’s how a wild rumpus begins? :)

I can honestly say that I have never eaten someone’s message. Maybe I’m missing out on something. We all show our appreciation in different ways.

I do know a kid who eats paper prayer cards.

I think when he/she heard the words ‘holy’cards it triggered a second meaning ‘holey’ cards and they then made it accurate
