your brain on chocolate.

Standard

made a quick stop into a local shop

to grab a couple of bottles of wine for gifts

on my way to the checkout line

there was a food sample display

with small broken pieces of ghiradelli chocolate for tasting

i popped one into my mouth

 started chewing

but quickly stopped

when i remembered

i had invisalign on my teeth

so i swallowed what was left of it

assuming it would melt

but instead

it got somewhat stuck in my throat

i started coughing while in line

still not melting

still coughing

somehow i said ‘water’

the checkout person

pointed and said , “run to the drinking fountain!”

so i took off

got a drink

some of the water went down

but still not melting or moving

thought i was going to have to be heimlich-ed

yet again no melting or moving

then somehow it finally made it’s way down

walked back to the counter

cashier told me that some people have that reaction to chocolate

but my issue was that i had popped it into my mouth without a thought

and it quickly went downhill (for a bit, but not downhill enough) from there

finally i emerged from the store with the wine and no chocolate

decided that i should probably think about my chocolate

and not automatically start eating it anytime it is offered

but chocolate does that to a person

it just draws you in.

as far as chocolate is concerned,

there is no need to involve your brain.’

  1. what a horrible experience; had the same when a large tablet got stuck in my throat; somehow got it down with plenty of liquid; frightening — but I love chocolate, dark chocolate: allow myself a few squares each day :)

  2. Haha! I love the quote, but seriously it must have been a bit shocking to choke on chocolate. I’ve made a pact with myself that I won’t have chocolate or ice cream- and today I’d the second day!

  3. oh god, i’m laughing all the way down to the kitchen where i keep MY choco stash…. i’m guilty too. but then i’m swiss and we are bound by law to eat (far too much) chocolate on a regular basis. Don’t know your brand but seeing chocolate just cancels out my brain’s working. love the quote!!! hilarious and dangerous. but so is life in general :)

    • it was so crazy and embarrassing. the perfect storm, as I just popped it into my mouth without thinking, then the Invisalign realization, then expecting it it instantly melt, and running through the store, and finally making it back to the checkout intact. it’s hard for me to resist chocolate, so I really have to protect myself from myself. )

  4. Choking Is never a pleasant experience but at least your tongue enjoyed the treat for a moment or two. I am glad you were able to get that piece of chocolate dislodged. And that quote is, I imagine, quite truthful. Glad you are okay.

  5. I’m glad you’re okay! I’ve been considering getting Invisalign, but maybe I’ll just keep my crooked teeth…. I could see something similar happening to me. Take care.

  6. OMG, that must have been embarrassing. I am sorry about that. Often when I got a cough I got it really bad. And once it started I could not stop until minutes. Once that happened at the cashier desk when I had to pay… and could not due to that coughing attack. Quite a lot of people were waiting in line. So, no matter why it happened, it is embarrassing.

  7. Oh good golly, yes. It entrances us, doesn’t it? Before you know it, the chocolate is down the chute (or in your case – almost!). So glad you’re okay! I can relate…that reflexive eating business…nibbling w/o thinking. 🥰

  8. I would’ve done the same, Beth, but glad you’re okay! That’s scary! It reminds me of when a piece of a tortilla chip got lodged in my throat (first time ever) and it wouldn’t go downhill after a few hours. It was very uncomfortable and alarming even though I could breathe. So my hubby took me to ER and they gave me ‘something to drink’ to give it a nudge. It finally went down, but the experience was scary and embarrassing at the same time. And yet, the alternative wouldn’t have been funny. I think of all the times I’ve eaten chips and that never happened. But the doctor said that they get people in all the time with chicken, chips, etc. lodged. Chocolate does have that appeal though. :)

  9. Who wouldn’t have done that…taken free chocolate? Choking is terrifying. So scary. Glad you’re okay but never give up on chocolate, just remember to take your invisalign thing out before snarfing it down.

  10. I apologize for laughing so hard at your distress, but the quote was so perfect!! You’d think chocolate would easily melt and slide right down … Anyway, so glad you’re okay. Choking is scary business.
