yet another
delightful encounter
with a stranger
at trader joe’s
when checking out
my cashier
put the chocolate i was buying
into my hand
‘i know this isn’t going far.’
spot on.
working there a long time
knows what chocolate means to some people
rarely looks them in the eye
the chocolate gave him a reason to do so
i told him to
have a good day
he told me to
have a good life.

‘good things happen when you meet strangers’

I have a good relationship with some of the checkout ladies at the supermarket where I mainly shop. One of them always asked about Ollie, and a much younger girl said to me on Friday, “Hello, I call you the kind customer. I wish they were all like you”.
I try to choose the checkouts where they are working, even if it means waiting much longer.
Best wishes, Pete.

Fully agree with Yo Yo Ma, but one must also be quite careful with strangers, as we do not live in an ideal world…

Strangers are simply friends who have yet to be introduced. We should treat them so.

Although there are some in the Denver area, I’ve never been to a Trader Joe’s. I should probably check ’em out one of these days.

People working at Trader Joe’s are very friendly! Some of the customers, too. A month ago, I finished my shopping and was lifting my bags out of the grocery cart. A lady approached and asked, “Does this cart know where to get the good stuff?” I said it led me to flowers and candy. She smiled and said, “I’ll take it then.” I explained that it was my wife’s birthday, and the lady told me to wish my wife a happy birthday. Definitely a delightful encounter 🌞

I can’t even begin to tell you how much I LOVE this exchange. Most often, clerks don’t even look at you anymore. But this, oh, this, was beyond lovely in every imaginable way!
