thanks to the library consortium, and the detroit public libraries
i recently had the pleasure of attending an online talk
featuring one of my favorite authors, kate dicamillo
just as friendly and full of whimsy as i had imagined
she talked about how she got her ideas
for stories and characters
how they became a part of her
i’ve loved her books for years
she writes for children of all ages
in the last few years i’ve read some of them again
with new eyes and life experience
i’ve been even more taken with them
each filled with hope and joy and spirit
characters who refuse to be anything other than who they are
and who, against the odds, never surrender
she has such a brilliant magic to her writing.

below is a link to a post i wrote not long ago, about one of my very favorite books of hers, ‘the miraculous journey of edward tulane’, which was beautiful and moved me to tears.

What a treat for you! Always a favorite with my classes. I just now looked again to remember her books. I had to laugh at the suggested ages for the books. I would recommend them for any and all ages!!

I have seen the film adaptation of ‘Because of Winn-Dixie’, and loved it. And Kate’s curly dog is great!
Best wishes, Pete.

Yes, yes, yes!!! Thank you for this wonderful post, Beth. I have heard her speak a few times, and she often talks about hope and magic. She also handwrites cards back to those who write to her (like me.) I have read every one of her books, and my favorite is Edward, too. I remember your post. ❤️

OMG I’m so glad you attended this! We are also hosting these virtual author talks at my library job and they are fantastic opportunities! I can’t wait to tell my manager that you watched via your local library!

yes, this is my second one, the first was Fredrik Backman, another favorite, nice because a group of libraries grouped together, so people all over the country could join in –

It really does, doesn’t it, Beth? By any chance do you happen to know if the library consortium and the Detroit Public Libraries hold in-person events throughout the year with authors like Kate? Thanks, Beth!

here is a link to the consortium. since I’ve been following, the last couple of years, they’ve been online, but not sure if any have been in the past. the ones that I’ve seen in person have been hosted by our local indie bookstores: literati, schuler books, or booksweet, all in ann arbor, and held either in store, or in the Michigan theater. (I’ve seen ann patchett and David seders this way). traverse city also has an author series, some in person, and some online, I believe.

Thanks so much for the information, Beth! It’s good to know that your local indie bookstores hold some in-person events, etc. I don’t see a link, though. Please forgive me if it is right in front of me! LOL
