you know how you start out doing one thing
and it leads to another
and another
and yet another
soon you realize you’ve tumbled right down
into the rabbit hole?
that was me yesterday
i’ll try to recount the steps in the order they fell –
—
sitting on my couch drinking a cup of morning coffee
reading and responding to blogs
i looked over at a pillow on my couch
i remembered buying it, loved it’s design
now it looked faded
thought i’d try washing the cover to see if it had any hope
checked online to see if there were any similar that i could purchase
went onto a site for a store that has designs i love
scrolled through all of the pillows and found a few i liked
finally chose one
when i went to order it
a note popped up
saying members only ‘20% off today – last day,’
i went to officially sign in, it refused my password, saying it had expired
went through the new password process, they sent and email authorization to me
went back in and took a couple of tries to change and save my password
went back in again, now as a ‘member’ , found the pillow, put it in my cart
went to order it and it asked for the code for the discount
went back a few steps, found the code
found the pillow again and put it in my cart again
said it needed me to update my address, as my zip code didn’t match, different since i’ve moved
changed the address info
said discount only applied if ordered online and picked up in store
fine by me, the store is close by
changed the shipping method
finally ordered and said they’d email me when ready for pickup.
went out and did errands and stopped by store to pickup.
manager told me it wasn’t ready yet, but i was welcome to try to find it in the store,
buy it, and then they would cancel my online order
i searched the whole store and found many, many pillows, except for the one i ordered.
she told me they’d let me know when it was found and ready.
on my way out, i saw a rug that i loved, another item i’ve been wanting to replace.
ordered it online from my car in their parking lot to get the ‘member deal’ and drove home.
an hour later, i got the email that my rug was ready for pickup, but no word on the earlier order of the pilow.
decided to climb out of the rabbit hole for the day and wait until i hear that they are both ready to be picked up.
my how it so easy to fall in –
today is a new day
hoping for a soft landing on my pillow on my rug.

I can so relate to this. I have lost complete days with things like that. I once had three items delivered, followed soon after by an email to say that they were ready for collection in the shop. So I had to drive to the shop anyway to cancel the collection order and explain they were delivered. It took almost a month to get the refund!
Best wishes, Pete.

You perfectly explain why I prefer to shop exclusively shop brick and mortar, Beth, leaving the line rabbit holes to my dear wife.

I should have just gone to the store, but was only browsing to see what was available… and then….)

It is SO easy to get lost and side-tracked and meander down that hole.
Wishing you a relaxed day that does not include any running around!

That’s why I do my shopping at Goodwill. As long as I can drive, I will shop locally and pay in cash.

I’m convinced that businesses purposefully create all of these ‘walls’ in order to make us end up purchasing more than was intended. I prefer shopping online with the “deliver to address” availability because I don’t end up scrolling for other items the way I would walk through the aisle of a store. But, a new pillow AND a new rug will make you content long after the hassle to acquire them (at least I hope so!).

What a journey. It is the modern way, so endlessly convenient if you can keep track of your bazillion accounts. Hope pillow and rug made it full circle.

Oh yes – I’ve fallen down that rabbit hole before. Not THAT one specifically but probably the one right next to it. So good to know I’m in good company. :) Love how you captured this!

My wife and I were just having this conversation. The simplest of things keep getting more complicated all the time. Nothing like wasting time on things that should take one minute. Today, WordPress has been acting up and people have been writing to me telling me they can’t access my blog for some reason. My views are about half of what they normally are.

oh beth, i’ve been there, done it – had the same experience (though without a deduction – but same story for members), was ordering a choice of three bathing costumes, wanted them delivered to a local store I had stuff sent to before. Doesn’t exist anymore, nearest one is way too far, so had them sent to me at home (@ extra cost), got mail that one will follow later – no good to me as I only need one but well….
the parcel arrives, all 3 costumes sent together. no return papers though. ‘affaire à suivre’ – watch this space! I spent hours already trying to find out if i can return items not chosen without paying for postage (again). MIGHT be able to return in person to one of their shops which didn’t have the suits but will take them back – IF i can find the time to drive there…. it’s a hassle i could very well do without.
