we were a formidable team
my two sisters
one friend
and i
an ad-hoc agency
fashioning ourselves
the finest of sleuths
solving crimes
righting wrongs
all around
our neighborhood
it was our job
our destiny
the four crows
walked the streets
the fields
the woods
went in old abandoned houses
from another time
looking for clues
to
crack puzzles
solve problems
imagined
and
created
as we
dreamed up
our cases
reading bits of discarded notes and lists
finding an empty pill bottle
asking a neighbor
where his wife was
as we hadn’t seen her recently
left a note
for a woman
who yelled at her adopted children
telling her she was too mean
we clearly
way overstepped our bounds
as detectives
sometimes
tend to do
all
in the pursuit of justice
in an attempt
to right wrongs
to restore balance
to keep peace
protect people
in a community
that didn’t know
they needed us
or that we were on the case
always looking out for them
in the most secret of ways
plainclothes
and
undercover
as a
murder of four crows
all under the age of 8
—
“the case called for plain, old-fashioned police leg work!”

Ha! I collected all the Hardy Boys and Tom Swift at that age. Mysteries were everywhere.

Oh our sweet childhood and the terror that we caused. I liked your investigatory work -all in the name of justice 😊 K and her equally young cousin disappeared one afternoon at a family BBQ. My brother was a leader of Neighborhood Watch at the time. We thought the terrible 2 were in the bedroom playing, they were 6? Brother received a phone call from a neighbour saying, some children have been going round saying there has been a double murder…. We took terrible 2 when they got back home straight tot the Police Station..so they could have a bit of a lecture. Scared the **** out of them. Sorry went a little overboard. 😔

i think that’s great! we were kind of running rampant and caused all kinds of trouble, more than really solving things i think!

We weren’t that helpful at eight. We borrowed a wagon and went from door to door asking for magazine. Then, we went back and tried selling them. :-D :-D :-D

I can picture the formidable sisters and a friend, investigating. You told this so well, love the details and the fun way you told this. Kind of scary and serious stuff mixed in there, too. Just like a real crime story!

These are the kind of childhoods that I feel kids today are missing out on with all the screens abundant. And also reminds me of the Junior mystery novels that I enjoyed as a kid!

it was so fun and was in an era where children were more free-rangers, without parents monitoring us so closely, we lived as explorers of our environment t
