I so love this!
there are a variety of reasons they do this
they use them as tools to break the shells of food they’ll eat
they like to play with and juggle them
they become attached to them
we should all have a pocket for our favorite rocks
I do tend to collect rocks wherever I go
and have my clear favorites
but don’t always have a pocket
how lucky the otters are.

I’ve got a rock in my pocket that I picked up from the beach near where I was staying when I was on a memoir writing retreat. Every morning when I walk the dog I give it a rub to remind me to keep writing.

Clever little Otter with his built-in toolbox … I don’t carry rocks in my pockets, but I do always have doggie treats in my pocket, for Frankie … 🐶

I did know this about otters, and have seen videos of them using stones to break open shellfish. They will also bring small rocks as ‘gifts’ to people that feed them or help them, showing what great value they place on ‘good rocks’.
Best wishes, Pete.

LOVE THIS! In my first year of teaching a student gave a rock engraved with the word ‘FREEDOM.’ It’s on my desk as a reminder of the freedom I have and the freedom I share through teaching. Melinda Klein – I will never forget her. https://makingthedayscount.org/2014/10/12/think-pink-freedom-rock/

I started collecting heart-shaped rocks awhile back. None of them are perfect, but I like the way they emphasize different aspects of love. I pick one to carry every day.

I’m a bit particular about getting the inside of my pockets dirty, Beth, so I carry the rocks I discover and take back for our yard in an old grocery bag.

A a couple of people had mentioned that they’ve been known to give humans or other animals a rock as a thank you for helping or saving an otter.

I’m kind of stunned at that! 😲 Thanks for the extra nugget.

This is so interesting, how a simple rock becomes a tool, a fidget device, a source of comfort and more. I, too, like to pick up rocks. I had rockhound great uncles.
