Retro “Crazy Vanilla” striped 60s ice cream (1965)
treat from the 60s
crazy cool so delicious
a mind-bender too
—
here’s their pitch:
Don’t let the crazy stripes fool you. They’re vanilla too!
Crazy Vanilla looks like crazy because it has red and blue stripes leaping all over the place. But it tastes like vanilla because that’s what it is — vanilla ice cream.
It’s the coolest, craziest flavor ever. And who else but Sealtest could bring you this wacky treat? Start swinging. Pick up on this wild flavor today. Man, like it’s the craziest!

“Peace and productivity,” said the Sixties. “Let us keep things groovy.”

I don’t think this was sold over here, but I’m sure it would have been popular.
Best wishes, Pete.

was it made for people to think there are 3 flavors?

I was thinking a kid’s birthday party–cupcakes with colored sprinkles and this ice cream. I always go for chocolate though. 😉

No ‘crazy vanilla’ ice cream in Australia, we’re not that crazy …

Pretty colours. All vanilla? Just colouring then.

Yeah. Because colours have different tastes. I noticed this when I started cake decorating

From the look of the fashions in the ad, I’d say it’s from, oh, 1966-67. 1968 at the latest, but in the more conservative fringes of Sixties fashion.

I was between three and five years old in the ’66-’68 timeframe; I don’t have total recall, of course, and my memory has perhaps been overwritten by documentaries and movies set in the era, but the “look” IS familiar. :)

Vanilla is a passe-partout but with these colours, an extra oomph! (unless they clash with the pie ;-) )

it would be an interesting experiment to ask people who knew nothing about this ice cream, what flavors they tasted, based on what it looked like. I wonder how many would say they tasted flavors other than vanilla. Perception is everything!
