the cold-weather snow key
(looks like mine will be november, the next ‘ber month)
Each year, Farmers’ Almanac releases a snowfall map that shows when your region will receive snow, based on previous years’ weather patterns.
Along with a map, is a key to show which regions will see snow months before others, if at all. Each color represents a timeframe when snow usually falls in a certain area. Purple indicates the earliest snowfall, while light blue depicts late or no snowfall.
And here we find ourselves, when snow might be on the horizon, depending on where you live. Some of us can’t wait for snow, reminiscing about hot cocoa, warm blankets, fireplaces, ice skating, cozy films, snow days off school (the kids) and watching the flakes fall from the window. Others wince at the mere thought of snow and last year’s frozen streets, power outages, shoveling, snow days off school (parents), and chilly temperatures.
Still, some people really love (and depend on) the snow and the winter holidays and cold-weather activities that come with it.
Whether the possibility of snow is exciting or unwelcome, the map is not a snow guarantee, but an estimate based on yearly averages. Some states might see snow earlier than expected; others might go the entire year without any.
Here we go!

ha ha, I especially loved Soupy’s words…. I have realised only this week, that I love really particularly autumn/fall, whatever you wanna call it. I like winter when I don’t have to drive, walk, or navigate the unpleasant sides of it but can enjoy the silent, cosy, peaceful moments, I love spring for the eternal awakening of nature, birds and growths, I mildly love summer for the daily swims in our little lake (once it gets over 20°C) and the meals, drinks and meeting-ups outside…..

I’m very much the same, especially with autumn

We had ‘berrrr snows around the first quarter of 2026 where I live. It’s not very consistent; sometimes we get snow on December, sometimes January, and sometimes February.

I’m not ready to think about snow yet. I want to enjoy some beautiful autumn days for a while. Supposedly, the El Niňo is going to make our winter milder this year, but I’d rather have snow than sleet and ice. I like a day of snow, if I can just stay home and enjoy the quiet and beauty of it.

Thank you, and I actually enjoy the beauty of it. It’s such a magical wonder. What I don’t enjoy is when it is icy and hurts the trees or I have to drive on it or when it’s way below zero.

I couldn’t agree more and say that from personal experience. I think we were more excited than the kids at times!

I am hoping for another ‘No snow’ Winter in Beetley. My fingers are tightly crossed, as the disruption isn’t worth the attractive scenery.
Best wishes, Pete.

We may get just one flake
That’s all that I can take
The sun makes us bake
And leaves we have to rake
Rhymes I love to make
Pity me for goodness sake

Soupy nailed it with that observation, Beth. I love snow, but I call for it to arrive for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Once we flip the calendar to the new year, I’m much less enthusiastic. For me, a mood-setter before Jan. 1, a mood-buster thereafter. Most of our big storms usually arrive in mid-January and February. We shall see how the Almanac fares soon enough!

I agree, I love it. I love how beautiful it is. I just don’t like driving when it’s icy and I’m done with it by February when it’s just great and slushy.

Could we be light blue just for this year? Okay, probably not. Never hurts to ask, right? Maybe we will have light snow this year, Beth. Fingers crossed. I like the July way of getting rid of snow. LOLOLOL

I love the brr months. Looking forward to them. But I’m old and can stay inside and comfy. We could use some moisture here. Finally got some of the monsoon rains we’ve missed the last few years. Keeping my fingers crossed. I love this quote.

I loved snow as a kid, but I’ve gotten soft over the years. I still like to see it from indoors, but I’ll only be outside if I have a chance to play with my grandson.

That’s a great map. I grew up in northern Sweden so I am very used to snow and love skiing. But now I live in Texas and want the tomato plants in the backyard to survive winter.
