“it is better to aim high and miss than to aim low and hit.’

– les brown
* Les Brown is an American politician and motivational speaker who served as a Democratic member of the Ohio House of Representatives.

Brown was born with his twin brother Wes, in a low-income section of  Miami, Florida. He was adopted by Mamie Brown, a 38-year-old single woman who worked as a cafeteria attendant and domestic assistant. Brown said that he was labeled “educable mentally retarded” in elementary school, which damaged his self-esteem and confidence.

When Brown decided to get his life together and get his career going, he was hired by a radio station where he was repeatedly unsuccessful with his speeches. It was only after the on-air failures of the previous afternoon DJ that he was hired full-time. Upon his termination from the radio station, he ran for election in the Ohio House of Representatives and won. After leaving the State Legislature he shifted his career to television and became the host of his own show on PBS and had a syndicated radio show on KFWB in California. Les went on to marry R&B soul singer Gladys Knight, became a motivational speaker, and wrote Live Your Dreams, a motivational self-help book encouraging personal achievement and goal setting.

  1. Oh my goodness, this story made my day – such a feel good motivational story of what’s possible in life. Gladys Knight is a great end game (although her recent news headlines were sad to read about). And the sloth is too cute too!

  2. I’d contribute to the sloth fund… and talk about coincidence… I used to go to church with Les and his twin brother Wes, well over 30 years ago. We attended The Church of Today in Warren, MI. Les was at the very beginning of his motivational speaking career and they allowed him to hold gatherings on Wednesday nights in the sanctuary, where he would share the wisdom of his heart with those of us eager to drink it in. I remember sitting there one night, Wes was on my left, and I muttered, gosh, I could marry that man, not realizing anyone heard me. Wes poked me in the ribs and said, girl don’t go there, he ain’t that man, he needs those words more than we do. Of course, Wes kept up the teasing at the coffee and cookie reception afterwards, embarrassing both Les and me. But I guess that is what brothers are for!
