what doesn’t itch.

Standard

the time is near

soon the colder temps

will come and stay awhile

never having been seen as a fashion icon

it will soon be time to take off the sandals

and wrap myself in comfort

whatever that may look like.

“i base most of my fashion taste on what doesn’t itch.”

fall, again.

Standard

my favorite season – fall has arrived

Fall Song

Another year gone, leaving everywhere

its rich spiced residues: vines, leaves,

the uneaten fruits crumbling damply

 in the shadows, unmattering back

from the particular island

of this summer, this NOW, that now is nowhere

except underfoot, moldering

 in that black subterranean castle

of unobservable mysteries – roots and sealed seeds

and the wanderings of water. This

I try to remember when time’s measure

painfully chafes, for instance when Autumn

flares out at the last, boisterous and like us longing

to stay – how everything lives, shifting

from one bright vision to another, forever

 in these momentary pastures.

very top of summer.

Standard

“the first week of august hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year,

like the highest seat of a ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning.

the weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring,

and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn,

but the first week of august is motionless, and hot.

it is curiously silent, too,

with blank white dawns and glaring noons,

and sunsets smeared with too much color.”

unbroken unity.

nothing like the feel of

walking on a lake of solid ice

remembering how it felt

swimming in its warm water

pure magic

“in the arctic, the inuit say water and land are the same;

they’re an unbroken unity.

in the winter, you travel on the ice because it’s the linkage and the easiest way,

and in the summer, you move around on the water.”
