What did Erma Bombeck write about her father?
My dad left the house every morning and always seemed glad to see everyone at night.
He opened the jar of pickles when nobody else could.
He was the only one in the house who wasn’t afraid to go to the basement by himself.
He cut himself shaving, but no one kissed it or got excited about it.
for all fathers and father figures here and gone

“my daughter said, ‘why are you yelling at us?’ and i said, ‘i’m trying to discipline you!’

and then she looked up at me with her tear-stained eyes and said,

‘this is how you teach children, by making them cry.’

and it was such a clenching reminder —

she won not only the argument, but she won life with that statement.

i just burst out laughing, and i think they were so surprised that i burst out laughing, that they did too.”

“did superman really want to save the world,

or did he just feel like he had to?

would he much rather be a farmer?

maybe.

would he much rather

be hanging out with his dad and his mom and his dog?

probably.”
