(perhaps me casually speaking spanish with a new friend i will meet)

looking forward to learning

a bit more of the language before i travel this summer

i think i have a really good base though

i’ve been learning spanish with my pre-k classes for 20 years

so i’m pretty good with

animals, colors, family members, my name, yes and no, and hello and goodbye

plus,  i can burst into songs and dances in spanish as needed.

(i’ll keep this as my wild card)

read her book to us

out loud

proud and confident

while

younger grandie j

watched and listened

and

when she was done

he said

he was happy she could read the words

but he seemed

a

little bit

envious

and

sad

because he wasn’t sure how to read yet

until

suddenly

he had an idea

and

i saw

the lightbulb go on

just before

he announced

that he would

‘read his book to us in spanish’.

and

he proceeded to

show us the cover

as he

read us the title

and then

patiently

read

each and every page

in his version of spanish

taking his time

nodding and facing the book towards us

turning the pages

at appropriate times

pointing out the pictures

all while

happily smiling

 confidently

 chattering away

in a his brand new version of spanish

that was so very, very advanced

that we

the listeners

didn’t even

know the translations

but we understood

that he was proud

and

he was reading

and

when he was finished

he snapped his book shut

and said

in english

“that’s all.”

brilliant.

after more than a decade spent in kindergarten, i now am proud to say i have developed and maintained a strong kinder-level mastery of the spanish language. thank you so much señora olga, for your infinite patience and humor as you try endlessly to teach me, along with my little friends, and as i do my dances, sing enthusiastically with phonetically sounded out words, pummel the piñata, cha-cha step on the colorful foot-shaped cut-outs, use a fly swatter to identify animals, and try out my spanglish on you. you have taught me well. i know there are times you would like nothing better than to say to me, the following phrase, (below), but you have not, as of yet. (at least as far as i know). and for this, i dedicate this cinco de mayo to you, and i look forward to the piñata frenzy later this morning.
