(not me, or my teeth, but i loved his toothy grin)
i read an article about the top tips and habits that dentists wish we’d stop doing to our teeth
it began with the list of the usual suspects:
brushing too hard, skipping floss, drinking sugary and acidic drinks, all day grazing…
and then
the last ones, which were a bit more alarming and that i didn’t know were a habit for some:
Using your teeth as tools – Your teeth are built for chewing food (not ice) and that’s it. This may sound redundant to some, but you really should not be using them to open bottles or tear into packaging as it can crack or fracture a tooth (sometimes deep enough to reach the nerve and push you into root canal territory). Keep a real bottle opener on your keychain and scissors nearby instead of using your teeth as a tool.
DIY your own dental work –Filing your own teeth with a nail file, getting “veneers” from anyone who isn’t a licensed dentist or whitening with baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, or charcoal can cause permanent damage — chemical burns, brutal sensitivity, a thrown-off bite, and enamel erosion all won’t revert back.
Taking your advice from social media – Influencers may sound sure, but most of them don’t back their tips with evidence. A hack that’s fine for one mouth can absolutely wreck another mouth. Before you try a viral dental trend, please ask an actual dentist.

Full disclosure: one of my daughters did make ‘braces’ for herself out of open paper clips because she was jealous of her older sister getting braces (until she really did need ‘real braces’ a year later and was no longer jealous), this may have fallen under the DIY dental work warning above.

I always wince when I see people using their teeth as tools. I’m sure they come to regret it later. Love the smiley dog! 😊🐕
Best wishes, Pete.

I don’t use my teeth as tools to open packaging and stuff like that, because I consider it to be inefficient and to keep my teeth safe. I always use dedicated tools. Thank you for sharing the tips. Bookmarked! ☺️

DIY dental work? Uh, no!
More and more it seems good dental practices and care are factors in overall health.
The smiley dog is funny.

What a great smile! I see the list hasn’t really changed much since I was a working dental assistant. I think I could still count on one hand the # of my patients that actually believed the “rules” we were trying to impart. I will confuse that on occasion I ask my current hygienist for a few extra instruments so I can clean coffee stains off my teeth in-between visits to her office. I mean, I know how to use them so…She always politely says no :)

I’m guilty of some of these! Last week I read that using mouthwash every day isn’t good for you 🤷♀️

I also made myself braces with parts of a silver bangle and press stick. I guarantee you they do absolutely nothing. Real braces are very uncomfortable 😳

DIY dentistry? Wowza! I definitely brush too vigorously but would never consider doing any repair work on my own! Yikes! (But I did enjoy reading about DIY braces, paper clip style! 😜).

The DIY braces sounds very interesting. Which of the two ended up with the straighter teeth?
For me, I need to wear my nightguard more as I get reminded at every dental checkup!

Both the same since they each ended up with real braces – my third daughter didn’t need them luckily 🍀

I was lucky like your 3rd daughter too. I can’t wait till T’s braces come off in about a year.

Love the dog. I try not to crunch ice. I may brush too hard…um…yes. Will never do my own dental work. Nope. Not ever. Not even if paperclips are involved.

i agree and also not file down my own teeth or take tik tok tips.

DIY dental work? That is very concerning. There is a reason that doctors and dentists go to school for so many years.

Interesting, I believe teeth are not strong enough to use them as tools….when we are young we should look after them more.
