Pics: Archaeological Park of Pompeii

A 2,000-year-old painting uncovered in Pompeii could show a “distant ancestor” to the modern pizza, archaeologists have said.

The art was discovered on the wall of an ancient house during an excavation – but the food it depicts looks slightly different from your Friday night takeaway.

Iconic ingredients such as tomato and mozzarella are nowhere to be seen, and it appears the flat focaccia bread has been seasoned with spices instead.

And while a goblet of wine placed on the silver tray might be more familiar to 21st-century pizza lovers, most of us would choose a side of garlic bread over dried fruit.

The painting was discovered just 14 miles (23km) from Naples, where the traditional art of pizza making has been granted UNESCO protection.

Pompeii was destroyed by an eruption of Mount Vesuvius almost 2,000 years ago, but the site was not discovered until the 16th century.

Since January, there has been a burst of archaeological activity that is designed to halt years of decay and neglect.

The painting was discovered in the hall of a house that had a bakery attached to it.

“Pompeii never ceases to amaze, it is a casket that always reveals new treasures,” Italian culture minister Gennaro Sangiuliano said.

Gabriel Zuchtriegel, the director of Pompeii’s archaeological park, believes the artwork reminds us of how far the humble pizza has come.

“How can we fail to think, in this regard, of pizza, also born as a ‘poor’ dish in southern Italy, which has now conquered the world and is also served in starred restaurants,” he said.

Almost a third of Pompeii remains buried under ash – meaning there will be countless other hidden gems that are worth quite a lot of dough.

food for the soul.

Standard

when you’ve recently climbed way back up onto the healthy wagon

 you have to choose between

the warm fudgy chocolate cake and creamy vanilla ice cream with a dark chocolate drizzle

or

the healthy fresh green juice

you make a deal with yourself

indulge in a bit of chocolate wonder right now

drink the magic green elixir

for your next meal

(which should offset all you’ve just eaten, call it even)

but somehow

the juice never makes it home

so the universe

has made the the decision for you.

now, that’s a bread!

this swirling Milky Way of a five-braid challah is so mesmerizing on its own,

it’s hard to imagine how satisfying it must be to pull apart—let alone to actually eat.

what to do with the time.

Standard

yes, i know it’s not cheese, but something about this sauce is like liquid gold to me

A Florida woman filed a class action lawsuit against Kraft Heinz … claiming its Velveeta Shells & Cheese prep time is not actually “ready in 3 1/2” minutes, as advertised.

She states that the 3.5 minutes is only the amount of time the food has to go in the microwave and claims it takes more time to actually prepare the meal — don’t forget you’ve got to pour water into the cup and stir in the cheese sauce.

She doesn’t say how long it takes her, but claims the 4 steps listed in the directions — remove the lid and cheese sauce pouch, add water to the fill line and stir, microwave for 3 1/2 minutes, and then stir in the cheese sauce — don’t equate to the mac actually being READY to eat in that time frame.

She’s also looking to put together a class of customers who might also be upset about the prep time and says the damages will exceed $5 million.

“We are aware of this frivolous lawsuit and will strongly defend against the allegations in the complaint,” the company reportedly told USA Today.

*editorial opinion: what if she was to devote all of the time and energy and money it is taking her to create, publicize, rally people, and carryout this lawsuit, and instead, use it as the ‘extra unplanned prep time’ she feels she is wasting and it requires, when making her shells and cheese? or, make it from scratch and compare the prep time needed. just a thought… (beth)

pi3 = pizza, pickles and pineapple.

digiorno is dropping a pizza topped with both pineapple and pickle in an effort to enrage the entire internet. which side are you on?

According to a statement provided to Food & Wine, the pizza is made with “a hand-tossed crust, with those all-important toppings. While we’d love to say we all get to try it, we can’t. Because DiGiorno knows this is just too explosive for a true mass-market release.

Instead, DiGiorno will give people the chance to snag one frozen pizza for free at shopdigiorno.goodnes.com via weekly drops. But please note that the website will not go live until September 5, so bookmark the URL for future use.

The pies will be limited to one per person, only available while supplies last, and shipping will only be available within the United States. We are very sure these pickle and pineapple frozen pizzas will go quickly.

cheese? not so much.- or- not so much cheese. depending on your definition.

Burger King is causing a stir in Thailand with its new offering: a burger with no meat and a jaw-dropping amount of cheese. This week, the Thai operator of the fast food chain introduced what it calls the “real cheeseburger,” a bun filled with as many as 20 slices of American cheese.

The item launched on Thai menus Sunday, at a reduced price of 109 Thai baht ($3.1), compared with the usual price of 380 baht ($10.9). It quickly went viral on social media in Thailand, with many users on TikTok posting videos of them trying the new sandwich. “This is no joke. This is for real,” Burger King said.

At one Burger King branch in Bangkok on Tuesday, a shift manager was overheard saying the outlet had to stop taking delivery orders so they could have enough stock left for walk-in diners.

The menu addition is an example of how fast food franchises around the world are seeking to gain traction by rolling out zany or eye-catching menu options that they hope will spread across social media.

Restaurants are also continuously tailoring their offerings to suit local tastes in different countries. In Thailand, cheese is especially popular among young customers, and it is common for it to be sprinkled on all kinds of dishes.
