the gift of nothing.

Standard

The Gift of Nothing considers two main subjects:

the concept of nothing and the value of friendship.

What do you give a friend who already has everything?

Why, you give them nothing at all.

One of my favorite books, now celebrating its 20th anniversary, ‘The Gift Of Nothing,’ explores the meaning of friendship and the meaning of gifts.

What is a friend and what is a gift? Things might not be what actually make people happy. Perhaps it is the people and our relationships with them that really make us happy.

Why do we give gifts? Is it to show that we care about the person and that we are happy to be with them? If so, is the gift truly important or could the real gift be spending time with them?

 a delightful surprise

getting back into the car

thinking of my next stop

a gentle knock on my window

opened to hear a smiling stranger say,

‘i just wanted to give these to you, have a beautiful day.’

 holding this lovely little bouquet

making my way back into the day

made all the sweeter with this gift.

my very creative and talented niece

just on the cusp of teenager-hood

presented me

with this lovely fairy

made on her way to come for a visit

with plaited hair

a hand-painted face

and fashion-forward attire

she was such a joyful surprise

due to her acorn cap beret and sense of style

i’ve decided to give my new fairy the french name of ‘brie.’

greenhorn.

Standard

one of my favorite teacher gifts ever

a big, colorful, ceramic unicorn

chosen and painted by a student

body painted green, my favorite color

eyes painted yellow, her favorite color

accents painted black, because they look cool

and a unicorn

because it was a gift straight from the heart.

p.s. i named it ‘greenhorn’ because it looks like it has magical powers

“be a unicorn in a field full of horses.”
