first time ever
on a school bus
on a field trip
looking at the world
passing by
and
full of wonder.

grandie v met a new girl at the pool
her daddy is a soccer coach at the university
who moved here from another country
though i have no idea where
the language that the family
spoke between them
was beautiful
yet
i couldn’t identify it
and
it was wonderful
to watch the girls play
and
communicate
without any difficulty
in two very different languages
neither one speaking the other’s language
but
they played and played
and soon
they were singing
to each other
and
laughing out loud
and
neither seemed to
even realize or care
that they began
with
two different languages
they were simply
two friends
speaking a new one together.
—
“the language of friendship is not words but meanings.”

kinders offer their presentations
to
the other kinders
and to us
their teachers.
they are very excited
as
they tell us
all about
the animals
they have studied.
one teaches us about
the colorful parrot.
another one asks
‘why do they fly?’
kinder answers
‘so they can see the world.’
in this moment
of clarity and understanding
she has
traded places with us
and has
become the teacher
and
we learn so much from her.

“feet, what do I need you for when I have wings to fly?”

i would like to
offer my sincere appreciation
to my 1 and only reader
hailing from
the lovely
french caribbean island
of
guadeloupe.
i wonder which of the people in this picture it is?
each day
one of them wanders
out of the crystal waters
onto the baby powder soft warm welcoming sand
under an azure sky
dotted with fairy floss clouds
back to his/her lovely beach hut
and takes a minute to read my blog.
here’s to you
loyal reader.

appreciation is a wonderful thing.
it makes what is excellent in others belong to us as well.

what is an antipode?
two places diametrically opposite each other on the earth’s surface.
they are very rare.
what is the shortest route between them?
a straight line through the center of the earth.
i recently saw ‘vivan las antipodas’
released in 2011
directed by russian documentary maker
victor kossakovsky
who had a radical idea
to visit these places
and shoot four antipodal pairs:
argentina/china
spain/new zealand
chile/russia
botswana/hawaii
he filmed it in a way
that literally
turned the world
upside down
and back again
for 108 meandering minutes
i was blown away
by the beauty
of
the landscapes
the people
the animals
the music
the colors
the contrasts
the connections
some things are universal
life
death
money
sex
family
friends
community
survival
love
it was
quietly
stunning
and
it was
dizzying.
