it’s that time of year again

and the ants have stopped by for their annual visit.

as i now know that their newborns may outlive me at this point

i may just leave my cottage to them in my will.

scottish children gave their goldfish a viking funeral

most people could only be so lucky as to receive the kind of funeral that two goldfish in the scottish isle of orkney were given by some children who were learning about vikings.

the pair of classroom mascots, bubbles and freddy, belonged to the 3rd and 4th grade classes of the papdale school in the town of kirkwall, according to the BBC. the fish had been with the students for a few months, but died about a week before the kids were due to learn about the vikings, so it was decided that they would send the pets to valhalla with a viking funeral.
the students created a small fleet of miniature coffin boats to send off the deceased, fashioned out of cereal boxes and egg crates. they also wrote and recited their favorite memories about bubbles and freddy. finally, they led a funeral procession to a nearby stream where the boats were put in the water, and the lead vessel was set on fire.

may bubbles and freddy forever swim in the halls of their warrior heaven, valhalla.

i recently watched this 2012 documentary that is a tribute to

three very strong and brave women

in three very different parts of the world.

Yoani Sánchez from Cuba, Zeng Jinyan from China and Farnaz Seifi from Iran.

what they all have in common

is that they are using the power of their words as bloggers

as a way to tell the world

about the oppressive regimes in which they live.

these activists and their families have been

threatened, harassed, attacked, jailed,

placed under house arrest,

falsely charged,

exiled and ridiculed

by their governments and the powers that be.

and still they write and still they talk.

and still they find a way to get the word out against all odds.

this is a powerful film about their fight for human rights and for the freedom of speech.

i will not soon forget these courageous women or this film.

the documentary won the amnesty international award 2013 and the WACC SIGNIS human rights award 2012, and was nominated for the swiss film award and the prix de soleure in 2013.
