3d or not 3d? that is the question.

when my girls were young

we went on a matinee date

to see a dollar movie in 3d

everyone was so excited

then came

the popcorn and sweet treats

the movie started

the cardboard 3d glasses

got bent

 kept coming off

i finally used their barrettes

to attach them

right to their hair

 greasy popcorn hands

made smears all over the lenses

 sticky candy stuff

got on their hair

 it got tangled

there were spills

 the movie was bad

at least one started crying

no one could see

out of their magic glasses

there was

a lot of

loud whispering

 it was not

exactly

what we expected

but we had

our own

very exciting

 real life

3d action adventure

right in our little row

none the less

and that’s

a heck of a lot of entertainment

for just a buck.

a mind that is stretched by a new experience

can never go back to its old dimensions.

hotdish there was a time

years ago

when there was not much money

but lots of imagination

and my three growing daughters

and so

the special casseroles were born

along with their legends

jewel of the sea

(tuna, old noodles, mushroom soup, peas and crushed potato chips on top)

‘it’s what the mermaids eat.’

cluck-a-doodle-doo

(same as the recipe above, just sub in chicken in a can for the tuna)

‘the crunchy bits on top (stale potato chips), are the special part of this secret recipe. it’s what the farmers eat.’

cowboy roundup

(cut up leftover hot dogs, beans, cheese, ketchup, mustard)

‘it’s what the cowboys eat on the trail, during the big roundup.’

just mix everything together

make something new out of them

turn them into a collage of food

give it all a name

create a story

bake it for a while

until it bubbles

scoop it out

eat until full.

‘yes, you can mix green beans, onion soup and ketchup,

it’s one of the most popular casseroles in the world.

not everyone gets the chance to eat this’

and we ate

and we were full

though there was

a bit of rebellion

and some questions

and organized sentinel duty

at times

‘let’s take turns standing by mom when she makes the chili.

make sure she doesn’t put anything weird in it.

don’t leave her side for a minute.

you’re the youngest, you go first.’

yet we all lived to tell.

happy mother’s day

to my three daughters

who are all now mothers themselves

and wonderful cooks

and to all of the

other mothers out there

and those who now have

or have had mothers

and mother figures

in their lives

may you always find a way to feed your brood

with creativity

with whatever food you have

and

with much love.

my odyssey with the iliad.

Standard

with the absence of my carpool mate

due to the arrival of her newest bambino

i attempted to fill my commute time

with my personal repertoire

of all things musical

every known

genre and format

then

sports rants

  in-car karaoke singing

 thoughtful npr shows

science

politics

mindless morning shows

when

i remembered

audio books

 the iliad

seemed

the perfect candidate

 a story

i read under duress

long ago

yet remembered

nothing of

i decided

to give it

a second chance

it was an incredible odyssey for me

filled

with drama

and matched wits

and dialogue

long forgotten

 “you are a bitch, unparalleled.”

“i will offer you 3 fine horses and a chariot or a woman who will sleep with you.”

“my wife, the goddess, defies me out of habit.”

not unlike reality tv shows

but much better written

with humor

and grace

and honor

and ego

and pride

and emotion

and death

and rituals

and flashy armor

and sumptuous meals

and lusty sex

and days off from fighting

for celebrations

and memorials

and just for rest

and always

the behind the scenes manipulations

with gods

and mortals

mixing it up

 all trying

to find their way

 figure out life

win their battles

much like the rest of us

and

i grew to love the story

all fourteen discs of it

through

rain

dark

sunrises

traffic jams

accidents

highway miles

sunsets

high winds

 i looked forward to it

every day

as i began to understand

who all the

‘son of, maker of, and those whose names all ended with the letter s’

 characters were

 how they were connected

 when it all ended

i was left wanting more

and

if only

homer had

written another

epic poem

he could have called it

“the odyssey”

oh, he did.

and

i can’t wait.

you’ll do all of that and more

when you read ‘chasing kites’

by tom nardone

of word press fame  – (iamtomnardone)

tom grew up dealing with undiagnosed adhd, suffering through bullies, schools, adults and family who didn’t understand him, and surviving many incredibly tough situations.

in this, his debut book, tom shares his stories, with unapologetic humor and honesty, as he learned over many years, how to overcome and live with these obstacles.

at last, with his take no prisoners approach to life, he has finally come into his own, with a loving and hilarious wife and stepson who accept him as he is, with all of his challenges and strengths. and he has found his voice, and his calling, in his blog and podcasts that let him reach out to others who may be struggling and who can use his stories to understand there is light at the end of the tunnel.

never give up and accept who you are.

a great read and a great message for everyone.
