my favorite shirt
lived in
worn to softness
tissue paper thin
color gone
shapeless and frayed
always feels like home.

“there is a special blessing in old clothes;
that aside from their comfort,
for which especially they are to be cherished.
they confer a certain kind of anonymity on one who wears them gladly;
all their bright places rubbed in a uniform dullness,
they achieve an appearance so nearly nondescript
that only a close scrutiny could learn that ever they held shape at all.’

(not our real hands, but good for perspective)
mine is the tinkerbelle hand with a minor ‘injury’ and his, the paul bunyan hand with a major trauma.
waiting in the store checkout line
browsing through my phone
the man in front of me
laughing and chatting with the cashier
saying it was a challenge to sign the receipt
because of his hand
hearing this
turned to face him
beginning to take in the situation
(major cast on his arm and hand)
while i quickly blurted out:
“it’s the worst, isn’t it?!”
whining about having an injury too
he asked me what happened
explaining the battle with my car door
he had a young daughter with him
was so kind and gentle with her
laughing and chatting
just as he had done with the cashier
when i asked him what happened
wondering why he had such a big cast
he told me his story
it involved him trying to stop someone
from stealing his fiancee’s car
and
a dog attack
instant perspective shift
before i could say anything
he turned to go
saying,
“i’m sorry that happened to you and i hope you heal really soon.”
all i could say was, “you too..”
how fortunate the people in his life are
even the strangers he encounters in his day
lucky to cross paths with him
this gentle giant
walks softly
teaching huge lessons.

i wonder
how many things
this chair
has been
to the people
who spent time in it
a comfort
a fort
a refuge
a tower
a snack bar
a hiding place
a favorite choice
a sick bed
a vantage point
an escape
a place to rest
a playscape
held together by tape and hope
so many stories to tell
now the chair sits silently
who knows what’s next?

what a wonderful way to relax
ending a long day with a beautiful book
all about finding your comfort
settling in at last
not a care in the world
tucked into my warm cocoon
until
the book’s spell
works a little too well on me
and i am very suddenly and very rudely awakened
right out of my comfort zone
after falling asleep and dropping the book on my face
hard.
it should come with a warning.

today a ladybug stopped by our classroom veterinary clinic
the kinder docs looked at it closely with a magnifying glass
decided it might be having trouble flying
after much discussion, more close looks, a few notes on a paper, a phone call,
and a blood pressure check of one of the other docs
their good care and magic worked
and the ladybug flew away home.

“true compassion means not only feeling another’s pain but also being moved to help relieve it.”

The lighter penguin is an elderly female whose partner died this year. The darker one is a younger male who lost his partner two years ago. Biologists have followed them as they meet every night to comfort each other. They stand for hours together watching the lights in Melbourne. Photographer Tobias Baumgaertner captured this image of two widowed fairy penguins looking over the Melbourne skyline. It has won an award in Oceanographic magazine’s Ocean Photography Awards 2020.

the time is near
soon the colder temps
will come and stay awhile
never having been seen as a fashion icon
it will soon be time to take off the sandals
and wrap myself in comfort
whatever that may look like.

(not me, but if i was a bearded male,
with a cup of espresso, a croissant, and a typewriter instead of a laptop,
this could have been me,
so – very similar to my situation with a few tweaks. )

late last night (probably around 9 or so)
soon to fall asleep
at the comforting lake house of my friends
about to write and post my blog for the morning
a couple of friends
saw that i was still slightly awake
so why not sit down
have great chat for a couple of hours
when i finally closed my eyes while talking
we decided to call it a night
so just a few more minutes typing away
to tuck tomorrow’s post in for the night
and when i woke up it was morning and my fingers had fallen off of my laptop and my laptop had fallen on the floor and a fellow blogger reached out to ask if i was okay as there was no post so i quickly set up the post i had meant to finish the night before and balance was restored.
