yeti, in the wild.

just before i left for my trip

one daughter and her family

were moving from one house to another

waiting for a closing date

so

i turned over my tiny cottage to

one daughter

one son in law

two grandies

two in-laws

two cats

and

two hives of bees.

 i

then

moved

into

another

daughter’s apartment

with

one daughter

 two grandies

and

glen frey the cat not the rock star

as he was afraid of

other cats and people and bees.

and

besides

there was

no way

my cottage could hold

any more people or other creatures.

my third daughter

stayed put

in her usual home

with

one son-in-law

two grandies

and

one giant cat.

while staying at my daughter’s

glen frey jumped through her screen one day

and took off into the woods

we tried and tried to get him to return

but he just ran deeper into the trees

we called him, looked for him

we left out food and water

and finally one day

he began to emerge

for breakfast and dinner

and

quickly left again

without as much as a nod

before speeding off

into the wild once more.

 upon my return

it was time to try to capture

the elusive woodland cat

who’d been living as a yeti

camouflaged

elusive

wild

deep in the trees

and my mission was to

bring him home once more.

we staked him out

during his most popular

evening feeding time

and sure enough

he showed up

but

as i approached him

he seemed to recognize me

yet

he ran back into the woods

always staying just beyond my reach

then

i saw him peeking out at me

and

he slowly returned

he must have remembered

and as i

offered him my hand

he began to purr

 turned his back

i grabbed him

 he yelled

it took two of us to wrestle him

we wrapped him in a blanket

put him in the giant cat/yeti carrier

and

i carried him off for home

with him yelling all the way

it felt like i had kidnapped

a reluctant member of  bigfoot’s cult

and

he was not happy to say the least.

he stayed up all night yelling

 yet

in the morning

he was resting

and

he’d found his spot at home once more.

i’ll never know

about his yeti days

and his time on the lam

spent with woodland creatures

and

wild adventures

of all kinds.

he’ll probably never tell.

Shadow of the Cat (01)

i woke up in the middle of the night

to loud screaming

coming from

glen frey the cat not the rocker

who was downstairs

in my living room

 shrieking

not like

a cat

but like a rocker

being attacked by something

 i

carefully

crept

down

the

stairs

tiptoeing

expecting to find him

in a death match

with a

massive rabid opossum

or

grizzly bear

or?

as i got closer

i saw who he was

running from

and

terrified of

and

 his enemy

was his own shadow.

running and running and running

in a circle

it was

chasing him

nonstop

 he was terrified

running for his own survival

 i shut off the lights

called his name

 pet him

talked to him

after a while

he calmed down

finally

he laid down

exhausted

 heart pounding

i thought about

the many things

that he might have

had to endure

before he was rescued

and

understood

that it all felt very real to him

as if those things were happening to him all over again

but now

he was home

and

he was safe once more.

one saturday night in 2012, a search party was organized in iceland to hunt for a woman who had apparently failed to return to her tour bus. but the twist? she had. she became part of the search party looking for her, unaware that she was the subject of everyone’s concern.

iceland_waterfall

the tour bus in question had stopped near iceland’s eldgja canyon and the woman in question took the opportunity to go freshen up and change clothes.

when she reboarded the bus, the rest of the passengers didn’t realize it was her. instead, they became alarmed that she’d gone missing. the driver waited for an hour before the police were called.
things escalated. a search of the area took place, joined by around 50 people, some in vehicles, many on foot. the coast guard was alerted, and the search went on for several hours.
it wasn’t until three in the morning that the truth became apparent: that the woman everyone thought was missing was actually helping them in the search. once she realized she was the missing tourist, she informed the police. the search was called off.
moral of the story? it’s always worth properly counting the number of people on a tour bus. no matter what they happen to be wearing.

LUCE COUNTY, MI — Two sisters who were missing for nearly two weeks in a remote area of the Upper Peninsula survived on Girl Scout Cookies and cheese puffs.

Lee Wright, 56, and Leslie Roy, 52, were weak but otherwise seemed to be in good condition when a state police helicopter rescued them Friday from a two-track road in northern Luce County, where their Ford Explorer became stuck in deep snow on April 11. The women stayed with the vehicle, which had died earlier this week.

The out-of-state residents relied on eight boxes of Girl Scout Cookies and cheese puffs for food, as well as snow for water.

“It is unbelievably remarkable,” said Michigan State Police Detective Sgt. Jeff Marker, who was one of four rescuers aboard the helicopter. “They had multiple layers of clothes on and they were rationing their food.”

Marker said the helicopter had been searching in the area for about two and a half hours when a sergeant spotted a glimmer in the woods about 2:20 p.m. Friday. That glimmer turned out to be the SUV’s windshield.

“We circled and we could see the vehicle, and then they came out of their vehicle waving their arms,” Marker said.

Wright, from Oklahoma, and Roy, from Nebraska, were traveling in the Upper Peninsula and had visited family in Ishpeming. They were last seen by relatives April 10. The sisters had planned to stay at a Mackinaw City hotel the following day but never arrived.
Their SUV got stuck in snow along Crisp Point Road, about three miles west of Crisp Point Lighthouse on Lake Superior. The road, just wide enough for one vehicle, was impassable, Marker said. Trees line the road.

The women said they tried to call 911 several times but didn’t have cell phone service.
Friday’s rescue came after the second day of searching by helicopter, Marker said. One of the women earlier had sent a Facebook message to a relative inquiring about Tahquamenon Falls, so police homed in on the area.

“Basically there was some mention on a possibility of one of the things they wanted to visit was the Tahquamenon Falls,” Marker said.

Once they landed the helicopter on a beach, police hiked for about 25 minutes to reach Wright and Roy in the woods.

“When we pulled up, they grabbed their purses and Lee Wright clutched onto her Bible and both women were very happy,” Marker said. “It was hugs all around.”

After expressing their relief, the women mentioned that a bear had visited their vehicle two nights in a row.

“They knew it wasn’t rescuers coming for them because rescuers would have flashlights,” Marker said the women told police.

Police called for backup assistance so the women wouldn’t have to hike out the woods. Prior to help arriving, a Grand Rapids family driving four wheelers gave them a ride to the helicopter.

The sisters reunited with family at Luce County Airport and were transported to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry for precautionary medical evaluations and treatment.
“The family’s very relieved,” Marker said.

this handsome fellow,
