burning calories.

Standard

day one

of my return to healthy habits

slipped a pan of veggies

into the oven

got involved in a project

  over-roasted them a bit

is ‘char’ considered fiber?

‘food over flame burns, food over heat cooks.’

-alfred the great

food for the soul.

Standard

when you’ve recently climbed way back up onto the healthy wagon

 you have to choose between

the warm fudgy chocolate cake and creamy vanilla ice cream with a dark chocolate drizzle

or

the healthy fresh green juice

you make a deal with yourself

indulge in a bit of chocolate wonder right now

drink the magic green elixir

for your next meal

(which should offset all you’ve just eaten, call it even)

but somehow

the juice never makes it home

so the universe

has made the the decision for you.

“food for the body is not enough. there must be food for the soul.”

to raisin, or not to raisin? that is the question.

Standard

on the very first day

of my new and improved

healthy eating and exercise initiative

a rogue chocolate-covered raisin

emerged from hiding

under a blanket on my sofa

where it had quietly sat

lying in wait

for me to discover it

i stopped

breathless

 knowing this tiny temptation

was a test

 oh, what a test

who would know

just one

practically a fruit and coffee/cacao product

dark chocolate and fruit are both good for my heart

who cares if there’s a bit of blanket fuzz on it

that’s just added fiber

could this be the gateway

to a slice of triple-layer chocolate cake or velveta-laden nachos?

not today, fuzzy amazing hidden chocolate-covered raisin, not today.

the struggle is real.

i looked to the writers to seek their wisdom

they have a difference of opinion on this.

are you on team wilde or team emerson when it comes to temptation?

“i can resist everything except temptation.”

-oscar wilde

“we gain the strength of the temptation we resist.”

-ralph waldo emerson

boring.

Standard

the doctor asked me

the usual litany of questions

general health, lifestyle, habits, history, medical issues

she was excited to find that i was not on any medication

her happiness continued on through the list of ‘red flag’ questions

as i answered no, no, no, rarely, on special occasions, safely, long ago

 heard myself reciting my answers

finally blurted out that i must be really boring

she told me that is exactly what doctors want to hear

i made her day, but now i’m left wondering how to kick it up a notch.

“everybody’s life can be a movie but most of such movies will be boring!”
