kindergarten restaurant
is open
and
in full swing
everyone is welcome
come eat
come work
come sit a spell
order anything
that suits your fancy
pay what you can
the folks here are always very friendly.
nothing like a lunch
with
the kinders
and
pre-kinders
especially
when it’s taco day
it takes it to
a whole other level
one little guy
whose eyes
opened wide
upon seeing the taco
filled to the edge
with all sorts
of colorful things
and
put on his plate
and wondering
how
he would ever manage
to get it
into his mouth
and
away from the floor
calmly says,
‘i’m going to need chopsticks to eat this’
i always admire those
out of the box thinkers
well played little man
and i must admit
i hadn’t thought of that
but we may
have to call in
the big guns
for this one
meet the eatensil

as we walked in from recess
e muttered aloud:
why do we have to take naps?
why do we have to take them every day?
why do schools make kids take naps?
whey do we have to?
why?
do all schools take naps?
i hate naps.
i never fall asleep.
i do not like naps.
naps are dumb.
when we
got back to our room
he
got a drink of water
laid down on his cot
and
passed out cold
for 1 and 1/4 hours
and
neither of us
said a word
when he
finally woke up

the first year that i became a teacher
i challenged
my multi-age third-fifth grade class
to find
the longest word in the english language
antidisestablishmentarianism
to learn
how to spell it
to discover
its meaning
to be
excited
about the power of words
then
i received
the above note
from one of those students
challenging me back
at a higher level
and
i was
excited
about the power
of his words
and
understood
their meaning
and
discovered
that
i loved
being a teacher
and
learning
every single day
every time
i see a parking meter
i think back
to my days
in grad school
it was a frenzied time
driving
everywhere
running
to classes
day and night
not sleeping much
running
to substitute teach
running
to student teach
running
to cater
running
to family events
running
to drive my daughter
back to college
ironically
we were university rivals
running
to interviews
and all that jazz
and
no money
and
no time
and so
parking
was not
on the radar
i was
always looking for a spot
close to class
in a hurry
playing the odds
parking
with construction crews
or
at almost expired meters
or
halfway in and halfway out
of legal street spots
and
tickets were piling up
until
one day
i came out
in between classes
and
my car was gone
i called the police
they said they had it
but
i had to
pay off all of my tickets
plus the new one
they had given me
before they towed it
to get it back
they had reached
their tipping point
i walked to the station
and got in line
with about 200 thousand or so
other students
paying off tickets
i waited patiently
i planned
when it was my turn
to tell them
that
i was a single mother
working 2 jobs
going to school
trying to balance everything
with no money
and
that i was doing all this
to follow my dream
and i hoped
they would grant me
compassionate dreamer’s amnesty
and call it even
but instead
they said
we’ll need 450$
cash or certified check
which seemed like a fortune
and so
i called my daughters
to come to the station
and
pick me up
and
take me
to ransom
my car back
and
this meant
ramen noodles
would be back too
and
my amnesty bubble was popped
but my dream was still intact
===
i was complimented on my driving today.
someone left a note on my windshield that said, ‘parking fine’
