Shadow of the Cat (01)

i woke up in the middle of the night

to loud screaming

coming from

glen frey the cat not the rocker

who was downstairs

in my living room

 shrieking

not like

a cat

but like a rocker

being attacked by something

 i

carefully

crept

down

the

stairs

tiptoeing

expecting to find him

in a death match

with a

massive rabid opossum

or

grizzly bear

or?

as i got closer

i saw who he was

running from

and

terrified of

and

 his enemy

was his own shadow.

running and running and running

in a circle

it was

chasing him

nonstop

 he was terrified

running for his own survival

 i shut off the lights

called his name

 pet him

talked to him

after a while

he calmed down

finally

he laid down

exhausted

 heart pounding

i thought about

the many things

that he might have

had to endure

before he was rescued

and

understood

that it all felt very real to him

as if those things were happening to him all over again

but now

he was home

and

he was safe once more.

i stopped over to surprise

little grandie b

on her birthday

brought my gift

gave her a flower

shared a hug

then

she asked

if she could read to me

i had ‘read’ with her

just months before

when she pretended to read

a chapter book

imitating readers

she had seen and heard

excited to be like one of them

but today

she opened a book

read me every word

her little brother

said

“i don’t know how it happened.

but she can just read now.”

i told him

” it is magic.”

i was in awe of her

and

this surprise gift of magic

that she gave to me on her sixth birthday.

soul music.

we stopped  to listen to an ensemble of young girls

playing lovely music at the weekend farmer’s market.

their teacher said they were in the 8th grade

where everyone is asked

to contribute something to the community.

these girls chose to offer what they had to give –

their natural gift of music.

they had to organize the day

by asking permission to play somewhere

finding transportation

planning what to wear

being  on time

introducing themselves

and

remembering their music and instruments.

all of the money they earned

from passers-by

went to a local charity.

it was a beautiful lesson.

yes

i made another attempt

at keeping the brownies

in the pan

for more than

half an hour.

this time

as i was

tapping off

the

extra

powdered sugar

on top

almost all

of

the perfect batch

followed the sugar

right

into the trash

so

i brought what was left to the party

and

 had to call on

my wheel of cheese

for backup.
