A small horde of mythical creatures lurk almost imperceptibly within the museum’s wildlife dioramas.

Back in the 1970s, the Denver Museum of Nature and Science hired artist Kent Pendleton to paint the backdrops for many of the museum’s wildlife dioramas. Little did it know that Pendleton’s penchant for hiding tiny mythical creatures in these paintings would add a whole new dimension to the museum experience.

It all began with eight elves—or gnomes, or leprechauns, depending who you ask—hidden in Pendleton’s wildlife dioramas. An elf hiding in the lowland river. An elf riding a dinosaur along a cretaceous creekbed. Another elf sat on a rock in the Great Smoky Mountains. And others, hard to spot but definitely there, in various backdrops throughout the museum.

When these eagle-eyed volunteers began to spot the museum’s incongruous and thoroughly unscientific inhabitants, the whole thing began to snowball. The staff decided to go along with the game, adding more elves and gnomes to the museum. A ceramic elf, for example, found his way onto the Candor Chasma of Mars. And now a digital elf exists in the entrance video, cleverly concealed within a cluster of stars.

The fantasy easter eggs diversified, too; there are angels, unicorns, even a Millennium Falcon and a tiny Yoda hidden in the museum. Precisely how many creatures are hidden around the museum is an open question. The museum’s official elf scavenger-hunt guide currently lists nine. But Maura O’Neal, the museum’s communications and media relations manager, says there are about double that amount.

So even if you do go on the scavenger hunt, guide in hand, you’ll never quite know when you might spot an undocumented elf lurking somewhere, surreptitiously, in the Denver museum…

breakfast with elvis.

Standard

as i walked in, i looked around and asked out loud,

“is this elvis day or something?”

i heard a deep voice following me in who answered,

“you better believe it baby.”

and that is how we found ourselves sharing a breakfast space.

luckily, elvis read the sign, waited to be seated

climbed up on the counter and belted out hits

elvis worked the crowd and met a tiny dancer

and changed costumes before my second cup of coffee

it was a full breakfast.

found this sweet surprise

waiting for me in my mailbox

a very old tiny sleigh with a handwritten letter

from a neighbor i’ve never met

who’s lived nearby for over 50 years

she left it for me to add to my fairy garden

when the season is right

she took the trouble to repaint the sleigh

and write me this lovely note

wanting to visit the garden

but too shy to stop by to see it up close

it was such a kind and thoughtful gesture

i wanted to thank her and figured out where she lived

then wrote her a long letter back

to let her know

how much i enjoyed her special gift

and what it meant to me

i really hope that we meet in person in my garden one day.

went out on taco tuesday

for a

family fiesta

all tacos were just one dollar

and

when we got the menu

we saw

the new ‘surprise filling’ option

kind of scary and intriguing at the same time

we asked our server as instructed

“what’s it going to be today?”

but

alas

it wasn’t available

they ran out of it

must have been very popular

but

couldn’t they have

just combined things

and

made one up?

how would we know the difference?

raisins, mashed potatoes, and green jello?

or

watermelon rinds, blue cheese, and kit-kat bars?

or

whatever they found in the kitchen?

if there were mexican fortune cookies

i stopped over to surprise

little grandie b

on her birthday

brought my gift

gave her a flower

shared a hug

then

she asked

if she could read to me

i had ‘read’ with her

just months before

when she pretended to read

a chapter book

imitating readers

she had seen and heard

excited to be like one of them

but today

she opened a book

read me every word

her little brother

said

“i don’t know how it happened.

but she can just read now.”

i told him

” it is magic.”

i was in awe of her

and

this surprise gift of magic

that she gave to me on her sixth birthday.

ks, my colleague and friend across the hall

was thinking ahead

and

preparing for the school year

when ordering the food

for her classroom’s fishtank.

there were two size options available.

hmmm… she thought,

i may as well get the one

that looks just a little bigger

it costs just a little more

but i won’t have to buy it again

until later in the year.

once it arrived,

much to her surprise

it was a gargantuan version

of the little fish food jar

we’re all so used to seeing.

it kind of looked

like an overblown prank prop.

but it was real.

i think it will last quite a while.

i think it may outlast her little fish.

and even if she retires in 30 years,

it may outlast her teaching career.

it may be her legacy.
