these were one of the greatest food creations of my childhood
with the introduction of the mini-box variety packs
came great excitement
along with
new reasons to battle with siblings
how to divide the number of boxes evenly
who gets to pick first
did i open it correctly on the perforated lines
kellogs, general mills, or post packs
who gets stuck with
the ‘old boring people’s cereal boxes’
such unparalleled joy
sprung from eating it right out of the side of the box
pouring your milk on this sugary delight
turning it into a personal bowl
i thought i could never be happier.

“do you know what breakfast cereal is made of?
it’s made of all those little curly wooden shavings you find in pencil sharpeners!”

(not my breakfast, but how i imagine it to look if i had ordered the daily specials)
––
how fun to discover
that one of my favorite breakfast places
has changed up their menu a bit
(maybe now that the students are back on campus?)
adding 11 ‘breakfast beers’
and a daily special of
cake and ice cream
“celebrate everyday like your birthday!”
what’s not to celebrate?
“i discovered a meal between breakfast and brunch.”

late summer 2020
after spending the night at daughter #3s’ house
i woke up early at my usual farmer time
everyone else still fast asleep
hunted and gathered food items from their kitchen
soon realizing i had put together a ‘c’ themed breakfast
that was quite satisfying –
coffee with cream, chocolate cookies, cheetos cheese things, computer
i believe all food groups were well represented.
i know this guy might think that ‘c’ is only for cookie, but —

bunny stops by the yard for a quick breakfast
kitty sees bunny and considers breakfast
bunny sees kitty and keeps eating
kitty sees bunny seeing kitty
one inside, one outside
only a screen between them
understanding
each is safe
but what goes on in their heads?

et, longtime sporty friend of mine
signed up to do a quick 5k this morning
prior to our bookclub brunch
and was surprised to learn
that she was somehow stuck doing a 5-miler
due to a ‘volunteer miscommunication error’
and toughed it out, arriving on time.
please note the difference in her demeanor, expression, and body language
in the photos
before (above)
still running and realizing the mileage
and
after (below)
arriving at brunch and enjoying a breakfast bud light.
here’s to her mighty spirit.“either you run the day or the day runs you.”

as i walked in, i looked around and asked out loud,
“is this elvis day or something?”
i heard a deep voice following me in who answered,
“you better believe it baby.”
and that is how we found ourselves sharing a breakfast space.
luckily, elvis read the sign, waited to be seated
climbed up on the counter and belted out hits
elvis worked the crowd and met a tiny dancer
and changed costumes before my second cup of coffee
it was a full breakfast.
