ah, the choices –
to play it safe
and go for the fudge, chocolate chips, or mint
or to venture into something
a little more adventurous perhaps
like playdough or potholes?

our 5th grade boys
milling around
excited and nervous and happy
decided they were going to do their ‘gangster walk’
on the way in to their graduation ceremony
in their suits and ties
jackets thrown over shoulders
and i had to smile
when i heard them
strutting by
singing ‘sweet caroline’
at the top of their lungs
i’m betting neil diamond would take it as a compliment
and when they went inside
they recited their kind words
sang school songs
watched as pictures of their younger days
flashed upon the screen
and finally ended with a beautiful candlelighting
i’m proud of these gangsters
as i’ve known some of them since they were 3
before they even knew what letter ‘gangster’ started with.

happy national pack rat day – may 17th
There’s a fine line between holding on to nostalgia, and being a serious contendor for an episode of Hoarders. But just for a day, you are permitted to openly cherish the growing stack of Signals catalogs piling up in your basement sans any judgment of concerned family and friends. Who knows? Maybe your Beanie Babies will become collectibles again, and the joke will be on us.

mixed feelings
when walking inside from another round of snow
and being greeted by a 4th of july display
at least i have my sandals on

another day, another hobby.
in the late 60s
this was a book that i longed to own
i loved to get mail and loved to get free things
what could go wrong?
i used my saved-up coins to send in for the book
and could not wait to begin using it
i read it from cover to cover
marking pages, checking off favorites
began writing notes, stuffing envelopes, and ordering things
using stamps that i found in a junk drawer
before i knew it i had a small collection of
weird government brochures, lists of tips, tables, charts, and recipes
none of which were really of any use to me
but i didn’t care what any of it was
as long as it came in the mail and it was free
my pile grew and grew
until it didn’t
when once again
i realized that i had no income
had used all of my money to buy the book
and had no way
to buy any more of the stamps
that i needed
to send in my requests
to get free things.
what i really needed were unlimited free books of stamps
and it was on to the next ill-fated hobby for me…

*my easter/passover/april fool’s day/full moon kit-kat salad and its recipe
upwrap 7-12 kit-kat bars
break into delicious individual pieces
if chocolate melts onto your fingers
lick them clean
drop what’s left into a lovely bowl
toss gently
enjoy.
